As someone who grew up in a Nordic country, I have always felt a particular affection for Norse mythology. And among all the tales of Loki, Odin, and Thor, there was one that left a lasting impression on me. It is the story of Loki, Thor, and Thor’s servant, Thialfi. On a journey to the land of the giants, Utgard, they visit the giant Utgard-Loki. Utgard-Loki tricks the three travelers into a series of contests - all of which they lose. Thialfi believes himself to be fast, yet he loses a race. Loki prides himself on his appetite, yet loses an eating contest. Thor believes himself strong, yet is defeated by an old woman. It turns out that each of them had lost for good reason. Thialfi had raced against thought itself - an impossible contest for any human. Loki had competed against fire - another unwinnable challenge. And Thor had wrestled old age - a struggle no one can win. I cannot help but think of Norse mythology when I watch the United States at war with Iran. For the opponent the American administration believes it faces is not necessarily the opponent it is actually fighting. Iran is - if we remain in the Nordic universe - not an old woman that the United States can easily beat. If the American government were not blinded - like Loki, Thor, and Thialfi - it might see that it is not merely engaged in a struggle with a regime in a major Middle Eastern country. In reality, it is also confronting China, Russia, and other countries that seek a new world order not dominated by the United States. The United States can certainly blow up a great many targets in Iran. But that is not - particularly from China’s perspective - what the competition is about. It is difficult to see why Xi Jinping and the rest of the leadership in Beijing should not be quietly satisfied these days. By striking targets in Iran, the United States risks depleting parts of its strategic stockpiles of advanced weapons. These cannot necessarily be replaced quickly, as the American defense industry is not fully configured for sustained wartime production at scale. By acting unilaterally - and by repeatedly straining relations with its allies over an extended period - the United States risks standing more alone, while the political West becomes less cohesive. It is becoming harder to ignore that the United States does not command the same level of confidence across all parts of the political West as it once did. Rising energy prices are a far greater problem in a democracy - where leaders must face re-election - than in most authoritarian systems. The allied Gulf states have been given a reminder that the United States may find it difficult to fully protect them under all circumstances. And as for keeping shipping lanes open through the Strait of Hormuz: does the United States really want an open confrontation with China? It would amount to a game of chicken with extraordinarily high stakes. So, in short: who has the greatest reason to smile these days? Quite possibly: China. Might that not be part of the reason why China appears so remarkably restrained at the moment?
