American Eagle Day - June 20 🦅🇺🇸 🦅🇺🇸 Bald eagles are also a truly American bird of prey, living only within North America. In honor of National Bald Eagle Day on June 20, here are some interesting facts about these symbols of patriotism. Despite their name, bald eagles aren't actually bald. The name comes from an old English word "balde," which means white. The species' scientific name Haliaeetus leucocephalus translates literally to "white-headed sea eagle." These large raptors have a wingspan of up to eight feet. They weigh between eight to 14 pounds and females are larger than males. The bald eagle's soaring feat of flight is awe-inspiring. Bald eagles can reach heights of 10,000 feet and fly with speeds up to 100 miles an hour. Bald eagles have very strong eyesight, and are able to spot prey from a mile away. Living in the wild, the bald eagle's average life span is between 20 to 30 years. In 1782, the Founding Fathers chose the bald eagle to represent the budding nation as part of their design of the Great Seal of the United States. The bald eagle was selected to represent freedom and independence. #AmericanEagleDay 🦅🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸 *Source: USA Today*
