We're coming upon 30 years of impact! In 1996, more than 300,000 people gathered to demand better for our nation's children. In Oregon, we're proud to carry that mission forward.

@456trainMama @schools_us @KevinMahnken @OregonStand The pandemic clearly fueled absenteeism, no question. But Oregon is WAY off national norms (22%). That's way too high, but holy crap, Oregon's at 150% of the national rate...

@karenvaites @KevinMahnken Oregon's chronic absenteeism rates are unacceptable. It's time the state comes up with a plan to finally tackle this issue that has plagued us for years.

Gasp. What is going on, Oregon?? "Oregon’s rate of chronic absence reached a stunning peak of 38 percent in 2022–23, only falling to 33.5 percent by 2024–25 (compared with a national average of 22 percent the same year)." By @KevinMahnken @OregonStand

Oregon has less mandatory instruction than most states, which is the crux of the coverage. Crazy-high abseneeism, tho. the74million.org/article/amid-d…

After passing the Early Lit. Success Initiative, we noticed that many OR schools didn't have enough time to fully implement their new research-aligned curriculum. Time is a foundational condition for learning. Let's secure that time for our kids.

Good piece noting that one reason Oregon has among the worst educational test scores in America may be that it also has one of the shortest school years; by graduation, an Oregon kid has had the equivalent of a full year less than kids in other states. the74million.org/article/amid-d…

Oregon’s short school year is a challenge on its own, but students here also miss more school than almost anywhere else. When a third of kids aren't attending regularly, learning slows down for everyone. It's time to solve this crisis.

Three fewer weeks each year adds up. Over a K-12 education, Oregon students end up with farless time in school than their peers nationwide. By graduation, they've had fewer opportunities to prepare for college, career, and life after high school.

HB 4154 passed the Oregon House yesterday with overwhelming bipartisan support. Our thanks to @rep_wise for carrying the bill and for honoring the legacy of the late Representative Hoa Nguyen by strengthening student attendance systems.

Most states require 180+ school days each year. Oregon doesn’t set a minimum, so our average ends up much lower. In many states, students spend three more weeks in the classroom than Oregon kids do. That's three more weeks for learning, and more stability for working families.

Oregon sets one of the lowest minimum instructional hour requirements in the country, and we don’t set a minimum number of school days at all. Just across the river, our neighbors follow much higher standards.

An important read: @llmiller12 breaks down our study with ECOnorthwest. The compounding effects of chronic absenteeism and our short school year are stark. We'll be discussing the results of the study today on @OPB —tune in at noon! opb.org/article/2026/0…
