The Pentagon is hiding US casualties from the Iran war, The Intercept reports, and the numbers are staggering. An Intercept analysis finds nearly 750 US troops killed or wounded since the war began. CENTCOM has been feeding reporters outdated figures that exclude recent attacks, won't provide a death count, and refused to even confirm how many bases have been hit. A defense official called it a "casualty cover-up." The real picture: at least 15 killed, 520+ wounded — and that doesn't include 200+ sailors treated after a fire aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford, or thousands of contractors. Iranian strikes have forced US troops off their bases entirely, retreating to hotels and office buildings across the region. An Iranian drone already hit a luxury hotel in Bahrain wounding Pentagon employees. Former CENTCOM commander Gen. Votel warned this "could turn civilian infrastructure into military targets." Retired generals are now speaking out: the Pentagon knew Iran would retaliate against US bases and did nothing to harden them. "The failure to invest in hardened infrastructure was a choice," one analyst told The Intercept. Hegseth prayed for troops at a Pentagon press conference. A defense official's response: "Why didn't Hegseth protect them?"

The Third Gulf War (aka, the ‘Hormuz War’) is entering into its 6th week, at the very end of the initial White House guidance of a 4-6 week campaign. For the oil market, we are into demand destruction territory, although further releases of the SPR may help to buy time a bit.

Israel moved the red line & forced the war. POTUS’s original red line was no nuclear weapon for Iran. The Supreme Leader agreed & held a prohibition on a nuclear weapon since 2004. The disagreement & debate was on enrichment levels & monitoring. The Israelis convinced POTUS that zero enrichment was the red line, the Iranians disagreed, we took out their enrichment capability w/ Op Midnight Hammer, making enrichment a dead issue. Iran was back at the negotiating table afterwards, this was a major threat to Israel’s goal of regime change, so they forced our hand & attacked Iran, knowing Iran would then attack us, plunging us into the war.
Will Chamberlain@willchamberlain

@joekent16jan19 Bullshit, Joe. Steve Witkoff - the lead American negotiator - made clear the Iranians were intransigent and unwilling to make concessions. Are you calling him a liar?

The way Israelis keep talking as if Iran just randomly decided to victimize them with missiles -- due to anti-Semitism -- is almost impressive in its sociopathic delusion. Israelis really believe they have the divine right to bomb and exterminate anyone with no retaliation.

🚨 As you’re going about your day, hundreds of thousand of Israelis are racing to bomb shelter, after Iran just fired another barrage of missiles, including in Tel Aviv.

Ukrainians Operating in Libya Against Russian Ships In December 2024, the Russian cargo ship Ursa Major sank after an explosion in the engine room. At the time, Russia classified the incident as a terrorist act. In December 2025, an Omani-flagged oil tanker was seriously damaged by drones near the island of Crete. Then, in March 2026, the LNG carrier Kendil was targeted by naval drones in international waters off Malta. The attack caused explosions and led to the ship’s sinking. Now, an investigation by Radio France Internationale (RFI) has revealed that Libya has been providing bases for Ukrainians to attack Russian vessels. According to RFI, Ukraine has established operational bases in western Libya to launch strikes against Russian ships from its “shadow fleet.” A Ukrainian contingent of more than 200 officers and technical specialists is stationed at three main sites: an airbase in Misrata, the Mellitah area (near the oil complex), and a coordination center in Tripoli. The situation becomes extremely complicated because the cooperation agreement with Ukraine was signed by the Government of National Unity (GNU), based in Tripoli (west), led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah. With official governmental protection, Russia has very limited options for diplomatic or law enforcement responses. This creates direct tension with eastern Libya (Benghazi), controlled by the Libyan National Army (LNA) of Khalifa Haftar, a longtime Russian ally. Fil article: open.substack.com/pub/global21/p…

Trump's Iran "plan" has essentially deteriorated into adopting the Israeli strategy of mowing the lawn. An agreement appears to have been reached with Israel that the US and Israel will continue to bomb Iran for another 2-3 weeks, and after that, they will declare the war over without an agreement on the Straits of Hormuz. Note that Lindsey Graham has called for the war to end in 2-3 weeks and that Netanyahu has stated that oran no longer constitutes an existential threat. The first time in his life that Netanyahu had uttered such a sentence. During this period, as much senseless destruction as possible will be pursued in order to "bomb Iran back to the Stone Age." But this achieves nothing but putting the US into a state of eternal war with Iran. Trump himself has stated that the next President will have to bomb Iran as well. The textbook definition of a forever war. But the events of the past 48h - with several US planes shot down inside Iran - show that even this nonsensical plan is unlikely to work as it assumes a steady and controllable level of escalation.

🇮🇷🇮🇱 The Negev is on fire tonight. That orange horizon isn’t sunrise but Israel’s southern desert burning after another Iranian strike, the sky turned apocalyptic over the same landscape that houses Dimona, Neot Hovav, the chemical plants, the military installations… 35 days ago Netanyahu and his apprentice promised this would be swift. This morning the Negev glows orange and the bill is still being counted.

🇮🇷🇦🇪 Emirates Global Aluminium the region's largest aluminium producer and one of the biggest industrial complexes on the planet is confirmed shut down for up to 12 months after Iranian missiles and drones struck its Al Taweelah site in Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa Economic Zone. The smelter, casthouse, power plant, alumina refinery and recycling plant all evacuated, all in emergency shutdown. And the damage goes deeper than the strikes themselves with the power loss caused an uncontrolled shutdown of the potlines, with molten metal solidifying inside the smelting circuits , making recovery a months-long engineering operation, not a quick restart. 1.6 million tonnes of cast metal production annually. Aluminium Bahrain was hit the same day. Wood Mackenzie estimates the conflict is removing 3 to 3.5 million tonnes from global aluminium supply in 2026 alone and prices surged 6% the moment markets opened. Iran reached into the supply chain of every car, every aircraft, every building and every smartphone on earth and it will be felt for a more than a year.

Since the interception of the F-15E fighter jet yesterday, U.S. and Israeli fighters jets have begun flying at much lower altitudes over western Iran as they fly to carry out combat sorties, in order to avoid Iranian radars. While strikes on western Iran have knocked out almost all Iranian surface-to-air missile launchers, U.S. reconnaissance drones still somewhat regularly gets shot down over the city of Ilam. Additionally, ballistic missiles continue to be launched from Ilam Province, while airstrikes continue to target these launcher positions.

I just heard from a source very close to top of the White House that, following today’s shootdown of an F-15, an A-10, and the successful hits on multiple helicopters and other aircraft, the WH is choosing further escalation, including US troops on the ground. This would be madness. I truly hope that someone in the Pentagon or elsewhere can prevent this from happening. If anything was proven today, it’s that Iranian AD is still very capable and very intact. Any US ground operation will be heavily reliant on helicopters and other slow-moving airframes. Despite the assertions of both the Pentagon and POTUS, it is crystal clear that we have not reduced Iranian AD to the point where a ground operation is even a remotely wise decision. Let alone potentially inserting by air and then being exclusively reliant on an air corridor for things such as resupply and CASEVAC. History is replete with examples where this reliance has been disastrous. Further, the hard part would be after troops were on the objective. Our lack of manpower leaves little room for maneuver, and once static (which would be required), Americans will become a stationary target for the entire inventory of Iranian indirect fire capabilities on Iranian soil, and it is a recipe for failure. Simply put, this is not an existential war for the US's survival. It’s a war of choice that should never have happened in the first place, and POTUS should be finding a way out, rather than clumsily and recklessly sacrificing America’s finest.
