I’ve got one final Gracie update for you all 🐾 This week has been an emotional roller coaster. The universe put the sweetest, most gentle, most wonderful dog on my path and I made it my number one priority to treat her as my own and care for her while I tried to reunite her with her owners. Sadly, my search for her owners came up dry, so I’ve spent the past week and a half getting to know her, training her, and really bonding with her. We really got so close in such a short time. Even though I couldn’t have asked to find a more perfect dog, I had to face an unfortunate reality; I am not equipped to care for a dog long term. I am single, live alone, and travel A LOT for work. My career depends on being able to get up and go at the drop of a hat, and unfortunately that lifestyle just doesn’t go hand in hand with dog ownership. There’s a reason it’s just been me and my cat, Moosey, for so long. Cats are just a little more convenient and low maintenance than dogs. I’ve been an emotional wreck all week because I wanted so badly to make it work where I would be able to have the best of both worlds and keep Gracie while still continuing my career path. But the stress of having to find someone who can look after her for multiple weeks while I travel internationally was too much, and not to mention, too expensive. As I’ve been trying to figure out what to do, I’ve been lucky enough to be staying with my parents who have a house, a yard, and years of experience caring for dogs. My mom was recently diagnosed with cancer, so she’s out of work and home every day so she’s also gotten to know Gracie pretty well since we’ve been staying with her. My parents have watched me as I cared for Gracie, took her to the vet, treated her ailments, and formed this palpable bond with her. They could see how much I wanted to keep Gracie in my life, but also knew how difficult that would be considering my career and lifestyle… So they made the offer to adopt Gracie ♥️ I didn’t ask them to, but they also fell in love with her and knew they were in a place where dog ownership made sense. So I am thrilled to announce that my mom and dad will be adopting Gracie! I couldn’t have asked for a more ideal situation. Not only do I get to still be in Gracie’s life, but I also know for certain that she’s going to be loved and taken care of. I want to thank you all for your encouragement and support throughout this journey with Gracie. It’s been awesome getting to share this story with you guys. I know a lot of you were rooting for me to keep her as my own, and I really wanted to make that work, but I know better than anyone what is realistic for my situation. Dog ownership is not something to be taken lightly. But I’m so happy with how this all panned out. I can’t wait to be able to see Gracie during the holidays and whenever else I come home to visit! Thank you all for following along. Gracie has definitely left her paw prints on my heart. I am forever grateful I decided to stop at that gas station in Dalhart ♥️🐾

@FoxieKT If you need help tracking the microchip, we have a contact that might be able to track down who the family is, even if there's no information on the microchip. Please let us know if you need any help!

UPDATE: I took her in to see if she was chipped and she was, but there is no information registered under the chip. I have one more place to call to see if they can look up any information, but they’re closed on Sundays. If I can’t find any info, I’m going to do my best to make things work so I can keep her. I’m staying with my parents for a while so we’ll have a lot of time to get to know each other in a larger space before we hit the road again. My parents have 3 cats, and the dog is very friendly with them so I’m not worried about her hurting Moosey so that’s great! To everyone who has been telling me I should have left her and there’s probably a family out there that is heartbroken and looking for her and that she’s “clearly taken care of”… I think you’re delusional to think that it would have been the right thing to leave her in the middle of nowhere in 100 degree weather. I promise you she’s in good hands with me and I’m doing everything I can to reunite her with her owners. Trying to paint me as some villainous dog napper is insane, especially when you don’t know the details. None of us have any clue who her owners are and what her life was like before I found her. I think it’s better to assume the worst and take her in than to assume the best and leave her where she could have been killed. Some of you are absolutely brain dead. Anyways, she’s awesome and I’m gonna take great care of her ♥️

Update on the pup: I found her at a gas station in the middle of nowhere so I couldn’t find anywhere that could check her for a chip. So I drove her with me to my parent’s place a few hours away and will be taking her in today to see if she’s chipped and if I can make contact with her owners. I got her everything she needs for the time being (food, treats, leash, harness, even some stuff to put on a hot spot she has on her tail). I couldn’t find anything online about anyone *looking* for a dog in the area I found her, but I did find a post from someone else who found her from a couple weeks ago. My guess is that those people couldn’t make contact with the owners and ended up dumping her. If I can’t make contact with her owners, I’m considering keeping her myself. The only thing is that I’m supposed to be living out of my van and camping a bunch the next couple weeks, so I need to figure out how to accommodate her on this trip if she does end up coming with me! Thank you for all the support and kind messages! She’s such a sweet dog and I feel very lucky to have gotten to spend time with her 🐾 ♥️

Some people don't deserve animals. This disgusting human is one of them.

Because of the "No-Kill" movement, I fully believe shelters are fudging their numbers to hit that shiny "90% save rate" trophy. Don't get me wrong, the goal is amazing, but the pressure to look good on paper is definitely making some shelters play fast and loose with the stats. 💅
