Hey @gimkit — there seems to be a glitch on the Don’t Look Down game. When students close their Chromebooks and reopen them they are jumping up to 1000 altitude. My classes figured it out and there is RAMPANT cheating. Any chance it’ll be fixed so we can still play this mode?

@gimkit Hi! Sorry I missed this reply! It seems like kids are closing their Chromebooks until it places them on an actual spot in the game. I watched kids jump from having like 300ft to 1000ft by doing this. I didn’t super investigate how but I can verify the jump on the leaderboard

@ProfeDeAngelo Hey Amy! Over the last few days, we've heard this from a few different people. We'll look into it and I'll let you know what we find out. In the meantime, curious how this is used to cheat? In the examples I've seen, players are randomly placed in the air & fall to the bottom.

@doriecp Yes! This is what I keep saying about simple things like typing and formatting documents. People keep saying that the kids “need more paper” but IMO they need more practice on the computer doing daily tasks!

@TeachingSolved These look cool! I was looking for something more activity based to get their attention and get them talking to each other on day 1.

#langchat — I need help! We are on a block schedule for the first time and I’m in need of fresh, new ideas for the first day! I’ve got an introductory level class and level 2 classes. Anyone do anything cool on the 1st day of school you’d be willing to share? :)

@ProfeDeAngelo Playdough! Get the cheap small tubs at the dollar store - one for each kid - they have to make something they like and teach them how to say "I like..."

@ProfeDeAngelo We also do an intro to countries and then listen to the Gozadera song from Gente de Zona.

Looking for #langchat teachers who don’t bring (much) stuff home w them - what are your secrets re: grading & lesson prep (especially if you have a new prep). How do you strategize so you still have a life outside of school?

@allynnlodge @MmeFarab I’m not the person you asked BUT I can weigh in! We have an “extra help” time. I tell students that if they want redos of presentational assessments they have to schedule a writing workshop with me during that time. Same goes for anyone who just wants feedback beyond the rubric

@Adele_Liles @theDRAMAgoat1 I was just thinking that! It’s an impossible request anyway. I tailor my instruction to the needs of the kids. I don’t generally know exactly what I’ll be doing 2 days from now - plans change all the time. I won’t even do this for kids before they miss for a vacation

@theDRAMAgoat1 No. Once she withdraws, the student is no longer a member of that school and cannot continue to receive work or credit from that school. It’s ludicrous to think the student could do this. Perfect example of someone thinking school is just “here’s a packet.” 🫠

A parent at my school is withdrawing her child to move to another state & homeschoo. Parent wants all of her child's assignments through EOY so that he can "complete them at home to finish out the credit" via homeschooling. Has this ever happened to y'all?

@allynnlodge To me, the most fun part of my job (aside from actually getting to work with the kids every day) is planning creative and innovative units/lessons. In the past, #langchat has really helped me find new ideas & inspired me to get back to focusing on the parts of my job that I love.

@allynnlodge I’m just hoping for some balance as well. I didn’t really unplug from all social media and I don’t really have great insight unfortunately. It has seemed to help me find some peace outside of school but I also miss the camaraderie and collaboration with like-minded teachers

I took a huge hiatus from my professional social media for my mental health. I’m working my way back and missing my #langchat friends! Are we still Thursday night chatting or have times changed?
