The only surviving image of Stalin’s two deadliest secret police chiefs, Lavrentiy Beria and Nikolai Yezhov, taken in the 1930s... The photograph captures a chilling moment in Soviet history, showing two of the most infamous figures behind Stalin’s machinery of repression. Nikolai Yezhov, seated on the right, was head of the NKVD from 1936 to 1938 and oversaw the “Great Terror.” Under his command, hundreds of thousands were executed and millions more imprisoned in gulags. Yezhov’s zeal for purges gave rise to the term “Yezhovshchina,” a synonym for terror itself. Yet, in the paranoid world of Stalin’s inner circle, even the executioner was not safe. Yezhov was eventually denounced, arrested in 1939, and accused of conspiracy. His deputy, Lavrentiy Beria, the man seated beside him in this photograph, replaced him. Beria would go on to control the NKVD throughout World War II, overseeing mass deportations, executions, and political repression across the Soviet Union. His reputation for cruelty was matched by his notorious abuses of power, including widespread sexual violence. According to persistent rumors, Beria himself strangled Yezhov during his execution, a symbolic transfer of power from one chief of terror to the next. Though the story is debated, the fact remains that Yezhov was erased from official photographs and history, while Beria became Stalin’s most feared lieutenant until the dictator’s death in 1953. © History Pictures #archaeohistories

Ppl dont talk enough about how much of a masterstroke it was for Stalin to draw Hitler, who since 1920 had been singularly obsessed w/ Jewish Bolshevism, into a multi front war against the traditional western powers. Those powers had every reason to want to see the ussr destroyed
