The first Quantum Biology Hackathon wrapped last weekend and it was amazing! 29 contributors came together from across disciplines to develop 6 different projects exploring how quantum effects might influence living systems. Interested in joining the first-ever quantum biology hackathon? In just 2 days, the @QuantumBioOrg and Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) are launching a global event exploring whether quantum physics might be biology’s best-kept secret. If you're interested, please email hackathon@quantumbiology.org — there are still spots available! This hackathon explores an emerging field that investigates how quantum physics may underpin and optimize fundamental biological processes. It will foster collaboration between physicists, biologists, chemists, computer scientists, engineers, artists, and more to develop experimental strategies, theoretical models, and technological applications that bridge quantum science and the life sciences. How much more interdisciplinary can it get? When Teams will meet online and plan their projects from October 24–30, with guidance from regional team leaders. The main hacking sprint will run around the clock on October 31, November 1, and 2. Where Discord + Zoom + Berlin The Quantum Biology DAO’s Discord server (quantumbiology.community) is hosting one channel per regional team (Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Oceania, and South America). We are delighted and honored to share that the @QuantumBioOrg has been highlighted in @Convergent_FROs Research’s Fundamental Development Gap Map v1.0. The Gap Map highlights critical R&D bottlenecks that hold back science, alongside the capabilities and resources needed to address them. QBI is listed under: “Lack of Direct Measurement of Quantum Effects in Biological Systems.” This gap strikes at the heart of quantum biology. Without tools that can directly measure quantum effects in living systems, many theoretical ideas remain untested. Building the experimental infrastructure to finally close this gap is central to our mission. What if we could guide cell behavior with magnetic fields? Each protein or process may have its own “response profile” to field strength, frequency, and direction... so finding the right parameters could activate or suppress specific biological effects. There’s already a range of work on magnetic fields in biology. But the data spans many intensities, frequencies, and outcomes, without really forming a coherent picture of the mechanism of interaction. Our goal: build a rigorous understanding of how biology senses fields, so we can design intentional applications. Once the optimal configuration is identified, that field can be applied to reliably drive the desired effect.
