A little over 13 years ago I heard what I thought was a baby crying in the bushes outside my house, and it ended up being this adolescent cat. I brought her some tuna from a can and called her Emily, I don't know why. I didn't take her in at first but she kept meowing in those bushes for days. I was a single guy with a dog, so, when I invited her into my house to foster her it was strictly a temporary situation. I didn't think I'd end up with a cat. I've always been a dog person and I'm allergic. But, you know, when, after a couple weeks, a friend actually said she wanted to adopt her I found I couldn't give her up. I mean, she was just like having a mellow roommate who didn't ask for much. So many animals don't have a home and have to be put down so I thought my friend could save another cat's life, and I'd save this one. So that's what happened. As the years have gone by she's become sweeter and sweeter. She seems a little more talkative in the morning, a little more excited when I get home from work, a little more likely to want to sit on my lap while I watch TV, and a lot more likely to cuddle with our dogs. And as she enters her senior years I've only just realized how much a part of me she's become, how deeply we're connected, and how much I love her. I'm her person and she's probably the only cat I'll ever have. All of this is to say I'm really grateful she was crying in those bushes all those years ago. My life is richer because of her.
