The politicians and generals lost the Vietnam War. Maybe it was just unwinnable and no combination of strategies when the U.S. took over from the French could have saved South Vietnam. But that our vets who came back were so maligned remains a disgrace.

The way many of these men were treated when they returned home after, in the vast majority of cases, serving and sacrificing honorably was an abject disgrace - a permanent stain on our country.

Today is National Vietnam War Veterans Day. The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act, signed in 2017, designates March 29 of each year as a day of commemoration to pay tribute to the sacrifices of Vietnam veterans and their families. We honor them at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall.

Vietnam today remains a one-party authoritarian police state with no independent judiciary, no meaningful speech or press freedoms, and no accountable constitutional gov’t subject to free elections. It followed the PRC/Deng path of economic liberalization without political reform. So, Vietnam is the rule rather than the exception when it comes to socialist authoritarian states (in fact, there have not been exceptions). So in remembering the service and sacrifice of our Vietnam War veterans, one wonders what would have happened had our private commitments to South Vietnam made as part of the 1973 Paris Peace Accords process been kept and South Vietnam hadn’t fallen in 1975, would it have joined Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea in becoming a prosperous parliamentary democracy? I think more than likely, and perhaps with mass popular buy-in.

Served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. A Purple Heart for each war. One Silver Star earned in WWII, two in Korea, and one posthumously in Vietnam (where he deployed after his youngest son, who he’d hoped to replace and keep stateside). A true American hero. We should name cities after people like this.

There are a faor number of studies showing what happens when cameras go up (mild but not amazing benefits), but I don't know of any looking at what happens when they come down.

People, mostly white people, really advocated for this. They wanted to get rid of gunshot detection so people, mostly black people, could get shot and die because police response based on gunshot detection, said the white people, is racist.

If only there was some other way to alert first responders before he bled out. You know, like some sort of technology that detects and reports gunshots so that we don’t have to rely solely on 9-1-1 calls… Oh wait, @ChicagoMayor got rid of it.

Many urbanists want more shelters AND less public disorder Sorry but third spaces absolutely do get ruined when someone with a bad stench is there and encampments are blatant examples of public disorder. This is an 80/20 issue here and poor =/= homeless
