@Eabfranc @ACESedu @AuburnAg Great study! I’ll be eager to learn your results. I’m reminded of our field trials in Eastern North Carolina destroyed by black bears. Maybe you can do that work next. Ha!

We just started another trial on deer preferences for different crops (sesame, sun hemp and soybeans) and repellents (several products). Results coming soon... @ACESedu @AuburnAg

@TerryDaynard Andrew is a voice for clear- headed thinking in ag. His insights on this (and other topics on his blog) are always refreshingly honest.

@Eabfranc @ACESedu @AuburnAg Excellent visual demonstration on the effect of soybean variety on iron deficiency symptoms… and yield. Great work coming from your program!

@agronomistag Great resource. Thanks for sharing. Misinformation abounds on so many topics like this. It's nice to have more facts. I usually cite RJ Marles review doi.org/10.1016/j.jfca… Plus, consumed servings of fruits and veggies continues to drop.

@huckleberrypkr @agronomistag Where did you learn that glyphosate “kills all life”? That sounds like some hyperbole, which does not help the conversation progress.

@C4ClimatePol @agronomistag Where did you get this wrong idea? Geissler & Skow analyzed 64 long-term crop fertilization global trials- found application of mineral N fertilizer associated with average 15% INCREASED microbial biomass and 13% INCREASED soil organic C compared to an unfertilized control.

@agronomistag Seems puzzling, but many believe that animals magically produce the nutrients and carbon in their manure. Manure is a great resource, but follow the origin trail. Thanks for the great reminders!

@RobSoil Sounds similar to the Ryals and Silver (2013) study I used in my blog post. Applied compost @ 31 tons/ac to CA rangeland and then "discovered" major changes in soil and plant growth. According to their numbers, with the compost came 1100 lb N/ac.

A one-time compost application of 22.3 tons/acre resulted in higher yield, soil organic matter, and nutrients after 26 years compared to no-input plots. Context: producing this much compost per ac would require ~45 years of the region's wheat residues. acsess.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

@LuisAzcona @historyinmemes Huh, where did you get that idea? Plants can grow slowly in most any soil, but to have productive crop production, most soils benefit from adjusting pH or nutrient supply. It's not some conspiracy... known for millennia.

@historyinmemes That we need to purchase fertilizers from the store to feed humanity. Or to till the land. Nope. The soil has everything the crops need.

@coveryoursoil Thanks for sharing the pictures. How has yield held up with sulfur deficiency in past years?

The difference is subtle, but plots on the right have not had a sulfur application in >100 years. Slightly more yellowing in the top growth for these plants.

@FertilizerSoil Of course there will always be fertilizer imports in some of the 54 African conference countries. Did anyone suggest that each country be self sufficient within its borders?

Despite producing around 30M metric tons of mineral fertilizer annually, many African countries still heavily rely on imports, leaving them very vulnerable to market shocks? We'll be look for solutions to change this narrative at #AFSH24. Be part of the solution.
