@blind_via @i2cjak I’d even go as far as to say any revenue big PCB lost to this kind of tech will soon self-correct as makers reach scale quantities themselves, and send that business to big PCB for volume economics. Tech like this is a force multiplier where everyone wins.

@SAffaMerican @i2cjak fair comparison, big PCB won't literally go down when this becomes more available, traditional pcb will hold their value for a long time. The value this brings will stand out all by itself for the areas that benefit from these features and rapid turn around options.

additive manufacturing doesn't scale in any way. what does scale are giant panels of PCBs (what the industry has been doing forever)

I think it will only affect prototype and very low volume production business. Not sure how much of that makes up the total? 🤷‍♂️ Much like 3D printers didn’t put the injection molding industry out of business. What 3D printers DID do is eliminate the barrier to entry in the plastic component world. Anyone can now make plastic parts and sell low volumes at a profit.

The PCB 3d printer that I reposted, the Voltera is kind of dog shit IMO. BUT, it is low cost enough that regular people can buy it. The ones that sort of decent are really expensive and have their own problems (dragon fly). My vision is about what these machines will become, not where they are now. Because they have too many problems and are not accessible to people who want them. One giant leap from this industry will shake big PCB's foundations.

It’s only sad because this had been well understood not that long ago.
