The results show that certain macro trends in country differences can be seen at the micro-level of the #consumer - and indicate that consumers may perceive innovations in private #Mobility as environmental solutions, but their adoption could replicate car-dependent patterns.

We apply a framework of consumer engagement with #automobility and find that Canadians have significantly higher levels of Car Dependence and Car Identity, relative to Germans - but are also more concerned about the #environmental impacts of car use.

Canada has higher levels of car ownership, car #commuters, and urban sprawl, and lower levels of #ElectricVehicle and carshare adoption, relative to Germany. We investigate if these macro trends are replicated at the micro level of the consumer - a 🧵

New modeling research from @JonnAxsen and Chandan Bhardwaj compares policy pathways to reach 100% ZEV sales by 2035 - of the policies evaluated, a ZEV mandate is the most effective way to achieve the goal, with least uncertainty. Read the full paper: doi.org/10.1016/j.trd.…

What to do? Current fuel efficiency standards are less stringent for SUVs, so a policy that applied equally across vehicle sizes would more fairly target vehicle downsizing as a compliance pathway - while facing less opposition.

New research from @JonnAxsen & @Zoe_E_Long explores what attracts drivers to SUVs and what might motivate SUV drivers to downsize. Spoiler: it's likely to take strong policy to change the trend towards SUVs Read the full article: doi.org/10.1016/j.erss…

To reverse the trend, pricing policies that make SUVs more expensive relative to smaller cars are most likely to motivate a SUV driver to downsize. But, financial disincentives and taxes face high levels of public opposition and are politically unpopular.

In particular, we found social norms surrounding SUVs to play a large role in motivating and maintaining SUV interest. Participants told us that SUVs are seen as "normal" and the "right thing to do" - changing these social norms could be difficult.

START's @Zoe_E_Long explains a few of the challenges we face in achieving net zero emissions in transport. Above all we need policy to legislate GHG reductions and provide a long term transformational signal.

New research finds that consumers' concern about car impacts on society is associated with their interest in #shared, #automated and #electric mobility technologies. Congrats @gauer_h on a stellar first PhD study! Read the open access article: doi.org/10.1016/j.trd.…

We surveyed and talked to SUV drivers - they love their SUVs and aren't interested in downsizing. We find that their attraction to SUVs is about safety, space, and social status. Thanks @DavidSuzukiFDN for featuring our research! rabble.ca/environment/su…
