Disney is about to delete five years of canon because Rey doesn't move toys. The sequel trilogy did $4.47B at the box office. Force Awakens $2.07B, Last Jedi $1.33B, Rise of Skywalker $1.07B. The merchandise tells a different story. Star Wars merchandise peaked at $700M in 2015 when Force Awakens launched. By 2019, the year Rise of Skywalker shipped with a billion-dollar marketing push as the supposed finale of the Skywalker Saga, Hasbro's Star Wars line was doing roughly $150M. A 70%+ collapse during the trilogy's own theatrical run. Then 2020 happened. No new movies. A streaming show legally unavailable in most international markets. Hasbro's Star Wars revenue grew 70% year-over-year. One character named Grogu outsold three years of sequel-trilogy merchandise. The sequel cast specifically can't move inventory at any price point. Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose, Holdo: Walmart clearance for years. Diamond Select's president said sales on TFA and TLJ products "were not too strong." Hasbro silently stopped producing Rise of Skywalker figures mid-line. There is no mass-market action figure for Poe, Finn, Lando, unmasked Kylo, Palpatine, or Leia from that movie. The licensees gave up before the trilogy finished releasing. The Lucasfilm acquisition was a $4.05B bet on the merchandise flywheel that built modern Hollywood toy licensing. Kenner's best year selling Original Trilogy toys, adjusted for inflation, outperformed the entire Disney era combined. That's the asset Disney bought. Galaxy's Edge runs the same play. Over $1B per park to build a Star Wars land set on a sequel-era planet nobody cared about. Both parks underperformed projections. The Mandalorian-themed expansion now under construction is the admission. If the rumor lands, this is the most expensive retcon in entertainment history. Five years of IP development written off because the licensees voted with their order books. Luke, Han, Leia, Vader, Boba, Mando, Grogu, Ahsoka generate revenue. The sequel cast generates returns.

Fuck 'em. I really don't care. It's delusional bullshit behaviour. It's happening, deal with it. Compared to 300 years ago human lives are far more stable, the perception of instability is largely media driven hysteria. Lives in the West in comparison with those in global South are also far more stable. Yet it's the West exhibiting the majority of the anxiety ... because they're told to by the media. Fooled into it. Very little patience for those dwelling on it tbh. The opportunities from tech atm are absolutely vast. If you want to, choose to, ignore them and or cling to the past, that's on you. Good luck.

The games industry used to have a well known dillusion problem. The "I just Complex". Someone would rock up: I have an idea for a game... "I just need an artist, a programmer, a writer, funding, and someone to do the music!" The tech industry has now been infected by this problem, SaaS products in particular. Let me be clear, rocking up with an "idea" isn't being a founder. 99/100 times it's being a delusional idiot. Everyone has an idea, without execution, and funding, you're not special and it's nothing at all. Don't kid yourself, or others. Oh... and no, AI cannot fix this... it can make a workable idea faster to execute, sure. But you still need to execute on it yourself. You still need to to bring more to the table than the idea alone.

I was at Disney when the Land launched. In fact, I personally wrote a lot of the copy for the Star Wars Land rides and the Star Wars hotel in the marketing materials and for the website. When I say there was crushing disappointment, almost a feeling of betrayal that the whole thing was on the new IP and not the original IP, I am not exaggerating. Disney made the decision to invest this money in order to support the new trilogy, which they thought would erase the old one in the minds of fans. The level of hubris around this is one for the business industry history books. Bob Chapek, who was head of Parks at the time (since fired in disgrace), was in charge of greenlighting all creative in Star Wars Land. He killed things like a lifesize Bantha ride where guests would ride around the land on top of a Bantha. He killed the live show at the cantina. And most importantly, he gave the land its own lame subplot where you had to use your phone to scan kiosks and get some code messages deciphered so you were "part of the Resistance," but it had no payoff. Then reality struck: they made a trilogy that destroyed the OG characters. They elevated an insufferably annoying mary sue girl boss, added a pathetic loser son of Han, a divorced Leia and Han, a disillusioned and bitter Luke, and then killed Luke, Han, and Leia. Result: JJ Abrams' career was finished as a filmmaker. Rian Johnson was wrecked. Kathleen Kennedy is finally out as head of Lucas. Chapek out. Disney movies are garbage. The greatest entertainment IP ever created was lit on fire to appease the egos of the geniuses who bought it and thought they could outdo the original genius. And now it's too late. No one cares that Darth will be walking around again to John Williams score. The new Leia face character looks like Brenda from HR. By the way, Tomorrowland already HAD Stormtrooper) (the original ones, not the new fat ones_, Jedis, and Darth in a wonderful live show for years. My kids all took part in light saber battles against Darth Vader many times. It was hilarious and thrilling. Killed in favor of the new slop. Absolutely over.
