@starrybunit This explanation is specific to the Western LGBTQ+ movement, where the acronym originated and where the shift from GLBT to LGBT happened. So yes, it reflects that historical context, because that’s where the change occurred.

“The ‘L’ was also moved to the front to address the sexism that existed in early gay rights movements, where lesbians were often marginalized or overshadowed.

I know this bit of pop history is nice and heartwarming and all, and I myself have parroted it in the past because it's a nice story, the truth is that there's no reputable source to this claim and a simpler explanation for the adoption of LGBT over GLBT (it sounds better)

Queer History Fact: during the AIDS crisis, many lesbians became frontline caregivers and activists for gay and bi men when society and institutions abandoned them. Their leadership and solidarity are part of why the ‘L’ now comes first in LGBTQIA+.

@muttbutch So the “L” comes first not by accident, but by respect. It’s a tribute to the women who showed up when the world turned away. 4/4

@muttbutch By the early 1990s, many organizations shifted from GLBT to LGBT to honor lesbian leadership and correct their earlier marginalization. This change symbolized solidarity and recognition of women’s central role in queer activism.
