This is like choosing between The Godfather and The Godfather 2. It’s impossible and no wrong answer. Both equally great for different reasons. To me, “Reasonable Doubt” is slightly better and the best rap album ever. But “The Blueprint” is my favorite album ever made and I’m never picking against it. So, here’s my answer…

By the time Jay-Z released “The Black Album” and retired in 2003, he was already the greatest rapper of all-time. His 8-year-run from 1996-2003 is the greatest run by any rapper ever. 8 years. 8 solo studio albums. All great. 4 certified classics, maybe 5. 2 top 10 rap albums ever. Collab albums, a classic mixtape, features, soundtracks, ghostwriting, etc. Critical acclaim, commercial success, impact, influence, consistent greatness, iconic tours, legendary live performances and moments, classic interviews, etc. He had already established a legendary rap label and put on a bunch of talented people in position to dominate the music industry for decades to come. He achieved all of this in 8 years. Everything since has been him just adding to his untouchable legacy. He did it better than those who came before him. Outlasted his peers. And everyone who came after him has been influenced by him and has directly benefited from the doors he continues to open for them. They’re all chasing the standard he set. There is no gahdamn goat debate. There’s Jay-Z, and then there’s every other rapper ever fighting for positioning.

It’s truly remarkable that there was only a five year gap between Reasonable Doubt and Blueprint. Hov had a whole rap career in five years.
