The ancient Egyptian civilization declined gradually over centuries due to repeated foreign conquests (Persians, Greeks/Ptolemies, Romans, Byzantines), internal political fragmentation, economic strain, droughts/famines, and loss of central power. The pivotal cultural rupture came with the Arab Muslim conquest (639–642 CE), which imposed Islam, and enforced the Arabic language, and a new worldview. This led to widespread Arabization and Islamization: ancient gods, hieroglyphs, and many elite traditions faded as Egypt integrated into the Islamic world. Modern Egyptians retain strong genetic continuity (80% or more core North African/Near Eastern ancestry from ancient times), but with later admixture and a fully transformed cultural identity as Arabized Muslims. The monumental, intellectual society of the pharaohs ended because empires evolve, they get conquered, and adopt new religions, languages changed. Civilizational layers overwrite earlier ones, as seen across history (Rome, Persia, etc.). Scholars note this mismatch of society is real and largely post-7th century.
