I visited my friend Gatete in custody and saw a man weighed down by deep remorse, sincerely pleading for forgiveness and mercy over his actions. As he looked me in the eyes and I leaned closer. He pleaded with me to extend his heartfelt apology to the public, the elders and the authorities. He had already written a letter (here attached) expressing profound regret, taking full responsibility, and humbly asking for compassion and a chance to make things right. The plaintiff, too, wrote a letter (here attached) withdrawing the complaint and extending forgiveness. He is concerned those documents may not have been delivered to the addressee. Tomorrow, after nearly three weeks in detention, the judge will rule on the prosecution’s request for a 30-day detention. He is praying the judge considers his remorseful cry for mercy.
