US locking up the Gibraltar Strait? Hormuz, Panama Canal, Strait of Malacca, the trade war is moving into intense war for control of the sea lanes that is playing out on the ground and in the financial, legal and regulatory system

23.2 million barrels of oil per day flow through the Strait of Malacca. 80% of China's crude oil imports pass through it. The US just locked down a Major Defense Cooperation Partnership with the country that controls its southern shoreline. Hegseth hosted Indonesia's Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin at the Pentagon today and announced the elevation to a Major Defense Cooperation Partnership — a framework covering military modernization, joint special forces training, co-development of asymmetric and autonomous weapons systems, expanded maritime exercises, and subsurface capabilities. The two countries already run 170+ joint military exercises per year. This deal upgrades all of it. The geography is what matters. The Strait of Malacca runs between Indonesia's Sumatra island and the Malay Peninsula. It's 800 kilometers long, 1.7 miles wide at its narrowest point, and 23 meters deep at its shallowest. 82,000 vessels transit it annually. $3.5 trillion in global trade — roughly one-third of total worldwide trade — passes through this single waterway every year. For China, this isn't a trade route. It's an oxygen tube. China consumes 15 million barrels of oil per day and imports most of it by sea. 83% of those imports transit the Strait of Malacca. China also receives roughly 16% of global LNG supply through the same corridor. Hu Jintao named this vulnerability the "Malacca Dilemma" back in 2003. It's been China's single biggest strategic anxiety for over two decades. The math on a hypothetical blockade is devastating. If the Strait of Malacca were closed, ships would need to reroute through the Lombok or Sunda Straits — adding days and enormous cost to every voyage. The EIA estimates nearly half the world's shipping fleet would need to reroute. The alternative routes are shallower, harder to navigate, and lack infrastructure. China has tried to build around this vulnerability — the Myanmar-China oil pipeline, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor through Gwadar, pipelines from Kazakhstan and Russia — but none of these alternatives come close to replacing the volume that flows through Malacca. Now zoom out and look at the board. The Strait of Hormuz — the world's most critical energy chokepoint at 20.9 million barrels per day — is currently under active disruption following US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Traffic through Hormuz has collapsed from 138 commercial ships daily to near-zero on some days in March. The Bab el-Mandeb and Suez Canal have been half-shut since 2023 from Houthi attacks, with traffic dropping from 26,000 vessels in 2023 to 13,000 in 2024. Now the US is formally deepening its military partnership with the country that controls access to the world's largest oil transit chokepoint by volume. The strategic picture isn't subtle. The US is systematically securing or influencing every major maritime chokepoint on the planet. Hormuz through direct military presence and Gulf alliances. Suez and Bab el-Mandeb through naval operations. The Panama Canal through diplomatic and economic leverage. And now Malacca through Indonesia. China knows exactly what this means. It's why they've been building the String of Pearls — port facilities across the Indian Ocean from Myanmar to Pakistan to Sri Lanka to Djibouti. It's why Belt and Road exists. It's why they're developing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Every one of those investments is an attempt to build alternatives to maritime routes that the US Navy can shut down. The Indonesia deal doesn't change the military balance overnight. Indonesia has a long tradition of non-alignment and strategic autonomy — Jakarta already clarified that the circulating agreement is still a draft under internal review, not a final binding document. But the signal is the message. The US is telling Beijing: we're embedding ourselves deeper into the geography that controls your energy lifeline. The Malacca Dilemma isn't a theory anymore. It's a signed partnership agreement sitting on the Pentagon's desk.
