Please boss, don't put that thing over my face, don't put me in the dark. I's afraid of the dark.

Kenya opens talks with Yapi Merkezi to electrify SGR line from Mombasa to Malaba
The government has reportedly opened discussions with Yapi Merkezi on plans to electrify the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line from Mombasa to Malaba.
The move is aimed at improving the movement of goods and passengers along the 1,144-kilometre corridor and strengthening trade links across East Africa.
The company’s Vice Chairman, Erdem Arıoğlu, said the firm is interested in building a modern electric rail system that can support faster and more efficient cross-border trade.
The project is also connected to Uganda’s ongoing railway development, where Yapi Merkezi signed an agreement in October 2024 to construct the SGR section linking Kampala to Malaba.
Government sources say electrifying the railway could transform Kenya’s transport system by introducing faster, cleaner, and more reliable train services.
Electric trains are known to be cheaper to run in the long term and produce fewer emissions compared to diesel-powered ones, making them a practical option for sustainable transport.
If the plan is implemented, travel time between Nairobi and Mombasa could reduce significantly.
An express train could complete the journey in about three hours and thirty minutes, compared to the current five to six hours.
However, the talks are still at an early stage. Key issues such as feasibility studies, financing, and technical planning will determine when and how the project moves forward.
The discussions come shortly after the government awarded contracts to China Communications Construction Company and China Road and Bridge Corporation to extend the SGR from Naivasha to Malaba.
During the groundbreaking in March 2026, Song Hailiang linked the financing progress to engagements led by William Ruto.
The extension remains one of Kenya’s most important infrastructure projects since independence.
