Suspect Sought After Senior Citizen Scammed Out Of $3,000 In Fake Bank Scheme Police in Durham Region are searching for a suspect after an elderly woman was allegedly defrauded out of thousands of dollars in a banking scam earlier this year. Investigators say the incident began on February 12, 2026, when the victim received a phone call from a woman posing as an employee of a bank. The caller allegedly told the victim that her bank cards had been compromised and needed to be collected and replaced. Police say the victim was informed that a representative would attend her home to retrieve the cards and issue new ones. A short time later, a man arrived at the victim’s residence and took her bank cards along with her iPhone. According to investigators, the suspect claimed he would return within an hour with replacement cards and the phone, but never came back. Police allege the suspect later withdrew more than $3,000 from the victim’s account and used the stolen bank cards to make purchases at several businesses. The suspect is described as a brown-skinned male with dark hair and a mustache. He was last seen wearing a blue jacket, dark pants, and black-and-white shoes. Anyone with information or surveillance footage related to the incident is asked to contact Const. Hristov of Central East Division at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1701.
