@all_themoxie @OHORTAC @father_rmv So, because the Pope has not decried previous killings, he cannot decry any subsequent killings….and so he should not say anything going forward. That is the most appropriate Christian response?

You think Christ would be silent on the massacre of 20-40k Iranians? Because the Pope has been. Does the Pope really mean to contradict the Catechism and state that God hates all conflict? Or his call for socialism vis-à-vis universal healthcare and redistribution of wealth? If we take Trump’s tweets literally, devoid of context, must we not do the same with the Pope?

Catholic teaching is not pacifist; it includes just war criteria precisely because evil aggressors exist and innocents must sometimes be defended by force. Popes can (and should) urge restraint, mercy, and peace negotiations. But when the rhetoric appears one-sided—stronger condemnation of defensive actions by some parties than the initiating atrocities by others—it inevitably invites the "partisan" charge that is being hurled against Pope Leo.

It seems that many (not all but many) Evangelicals, particularly Christian Zionists, are stuck in an Old Testament understanding of war.

What has Pope Leo actually said that's terribly objectionable? Migrants' dignity should be respected, even as they're being deported? Sounds reasonable. Wars of aggression are bad? That sounds fine too.

@DrCalumMiller Just to clarify, Calum, his statement was in response to Trump threatening to end an entire civilisation. Is your critique of the Pope reflective of that context?

These sorts of sweeping claims are unhelpful and damage the credibility of those opposing this war. I have great respect for the Pope, and I agree very strongly with his opposition to this war, but to claim that God never blesses wars contradicts the clear Biblical narrative, or at least appears to. It makes the Pope look like an ideologue rather than weighing up carefully the case for war in general and in specific cases. The early Christians were mostly pacifists, as I have always been, but a) clearly God permitted wars prior to Christ and b) many Church leaders throughout history, including Popes and doctors of the Catholic Church, have held to just war theory. Those of us opposing this war will be much more credible if we allow that Christians can believe in just wars - but that this war is a million miles from meeting the conditions for just war.
Pope Leo XIV@Pontifex

God does not bless any conflict. Anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs. Military action will not create space for freedom or times of #Peace, which comes only from the patient promotion of coexistence and dialogue among peoples.

@ChristopherHale Their entire worldview scope is limited to buzzwords (Obama, Soros, liberal, CNN) so if anyone makes a counter point, rather than engaging with the substance, they default to the talk radio vernacular.

@OHORTAC @father_rmv I’m curious. What is politics to you if it how a society is run? And why would a Churhc leader not want to speak on that? If Christ were alive, you think he’d respond with “no comment” on a POTUS threatening to end a civilisation?

@father_rmv Pope Leo is alienating American Catholics (speaking as one). He needs to stay out of politics, climate change nonsense and focus on saving souls. He is turning out to be a MASSIVE disappointment!!!

@ChristopherHale It lays bare the ugly truth: Conservative Americans do not feel God should be correcting them on how to run their country. They are, however, devoted to guns and a regular supply of imperial conquests; these things they believe in without reservation. No higher authority.

I wrote this critical comment about Pope Leo’s pronouncements on US Government policies including the border and the Iran conflict. While I disagree with the Pope on these earthly policy matters I regret the words I used. The Pope’s moral statements are grounded in Christian doctrine and I am no one to judge him. I apologize for my choice of words.

I’m afraid Pope Leo is a Francis version 2. Seems to have a critical bias of all things Trump. We have a woke liberal pope. Again. Tragic.

@megbasham If your first reaction to a Church leader reminding us that Christ was opposed to violence and sought peace, is to attack that messenger, then it speaks volume about your beliefs. If Christ were to return tomorrow, I can only imagine the vernacular you’d lobby his way.

I am not trying to make my Catholic friends, who I love, angry with this statement. But this entire episode is starting to explain to me why so many Americans were concerned about a Catholic president for so long. I have no interest in Rome trying to dictate American policy. And if it continues to loudly make its opinions heard on our foreign policy, I believe they’re going to find a lot of American Protestants feeling a lot less ecumenical than we have been in the more recent past.

six million
Ramy Abdu| رامي عبده@RamAbdu

Six million people. That’s how many have been forced from their homes in just over two years across Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. In Gaza, displacement has become a repeated reality. Entire neighborhoods have been destroyed, while Israeli evacuation orders have pushed civilians from one area to another, often into places that are later targeted again. Today, the vast majority of Gaza’s population has been displaced, many of them multiple times. Source: UN OCHA - Gaza Situation Reports . In Lebanon, escalating Israeli airstrikes have driven more than a million people from their homes. Towns in the south, the Bekaa, and parts of Beirut have emptied rapidly, as civilians fled under the threat of continued bombardment. Source: UNHCR; UN OCHA - Lebanon Updates . In Iran, the widening scope of the conflict has forced millions to flee major cities, as regional attacks intensified and fears of further escalation spread. Source: UNHCR - Iran Displacement Report . According to UN agencies and humanitarian reporting, this level of displacement is not random. It reflects a pattern seen across different fronts: sustained military pressure, forced movement, and the steady erosion of any place civilians can safely remain. Different countries. Different contexts. But the same result: Mass displacement not as an accident of war, but as one of its defining outcomes.

I don’t need to open the thousands of comments to know American conservatives will be labelling the Pope as a liberal, antisemite, a George Soros agent or simply a man who knows nothing about Christianity.

💥Israel has appointed two obstructionist representatives to the Lebanon talks, is demanding Lebanon fire some ministers before the talks, and, per @AmichaiStein1, is blocking France's participation in the talks. You tell me whether Israel is acting in good faith.

I just found these photos of the schoolwork of 9-year-old Ritaj Rihan, who was shot in the head and killed by Israeli terrorist forces yesterday in a classroom tent in northern Gaza. One photo shows Ritaj’s practicing handwriting. The words on the page were orange, banana, and apple. برتقالة/موز/تفاحة The other photo shows her solving subtraction problems. She was murdered in front of her teacher and peers, leaving behind only these unfinished lessons.
