Dead is a word used to describe "not efficient" in today's football. Qualities of a DLP are not enough to play in the pivot. There is no player today that can support all the burden to create the situation where a DLP can have the ball in zones 5 and 8 with space and facing forward to perform as it should.

The DLP role is dead. Your DLP should be your CB or FB. Your DM needs to be a tactical genius, with no passing angle bias, able to combine and move and able to carry. His positioning needs to be impeccable on and off the ball. And of course he needs to be able to defend in a double pivot. The amount of capabilities required for the role makes it very difficult to find in 1 player, and a combination of 2 or 3 players is the ideal. Barca has it solved with Frankie + Pedri (And Bernal + Gavi are very strong as well) Madrid doesn’t and can’t do Camavinga + Tchouameni which is why they are using Thiago and Guler doing the rounds to get the capabilities required. Arsenal has it solved with 3 players in Rice + Zubi + Ode, and I think Rice + Zubi is also very strong alone, but not perfect. The pass to a DM facing backwards for him to turn under pressure and create is dead. You can have the best in history at this and it would not be consistently effective in the league. This makes our midfield construction a bit different than what we where building. Rice is perfect. Zubi is 90% perfect. Ode is perfect in paper but angle bias and defending in a double pivot makes him a 3rd CM/CAM and not a DP player. We need to complement these 3 and while I thought before we needed to increase in strong carriers, we also need to balance it out with another profile. So, I won’t use MLS or Merino in our 6 player midfield because I think they are the perfect 24th and 25th players for the squad as they play multiple roles and cover multiple areas and are specialist tactical weapons deployable across the board. Key players but not necessarily main starters (even though they can be), and will always be useful independent of the route we take tactically. Rice Zubimendi Odegaard Eze This is the core. Noorgard is OK, useful for a season or 2 while we build, but eventually should be replaced with a Rice like profile, b2b/DM with physical attributes and good quality on the ball. There are plenty of players here to look for and it seems Bouaddi is one of our targets, which I would support, and it fits the defacing of Noorgard. Although Pablo Barrios would be my main target here. But the other player, where I thought we should sign a “pass first” type of DM, I know think we should have a “move first” type of player to complement the Rice type. This would make me prioritize an Anderson over a Wharton for example (although we are probably looking an alternative player to Zubi and not a 100m target like these guys). It would make me prioritize a Valentin Barco over a Hugo Larsson, or a Mendoza over a Pavlovic. Warren Zaire Emery, Joao Neves, Mainoo all on that same profile but probably not achievable.
