@TOROKING We write TAFs for 7 sites across our coverage area and all of our forecasters take turns depending on the shift

Despite the radar not showing anything, we are getting reports of some drizzle or light rain out of the low clouds this morning. This is because the radar beam rises as it travels, so the clouds and precip are forming lower than what the radar can 'see'.

@TOROKING METARS are used by every forecaster here, not only for current conditions but also to aid in aviation forecasts.

@NWSTwinCities Thanks, do you ever pull in METAR data to help analyze current conditions?

@TOROKING There is! The lowest tilt is 0.5 degrees. When we are actively interrogating radar we have the capability to 'sample' the data, which tells both how far away and how high up the returns are. This only works when there are returns on the radar however, so not useful right now.
