In my first thread, I’d like to break down Jesse Marsch’s Canada 🇨🇦 and share a few thoughts on how they match up against Bosnia & Herzegovina 🇧🇦 Every like, RT, comment, and bit of criticism is highly appreciated. Let’s enjoy a great World Cup together. ❤️ Jesse Marsch is heavily influenced by the “Red Bull philosophy” and learned his fundamentals under the “Red Bull architect” Ralf Rangnick, working as his assistant. Because of this, the key elements of his style are: • Super aggressive high pressing • A vertical playing style rather than patient buildup • Structured zones and compactness Let’s break them down. ⚡️

I don’t think anyone would deny that. Croatia is a top, top football nation and a strong sporting nation in general. There are, of course, several factors behind this. We “lose” players not only to Western European countries but also to our neighbours due to our somewhat unique demographic situation. I put “lose” in quotation marks because I know it’s not entirely accurate to describe it that way, but there are at least four or five such cases per generation. Secondly, Croatia has a huge advantage when it comes to player development. Croatian players can move to virtually any league and obtain a regular work permit, whereas our players often occupy non-EU spots in many leagues. As a result, they need to be significantly better than their direct competitors from South America, Africa, and elsewhere to secure those opportunities.

🇧🇦🏆 What is probably already know (but still worth emphasizing) is that we are the fourth-smallest country by population at the 2026 World Cup, and certainly the smallest European participant. One could even argue that our effective population base is smaller than that of Qatar, given well-known factors related to demographics and national identification (quite apart from the fact that Qatar has had vast financial resources and a state-of-the-art, multi-billion-dollar football development program in place for over 15 years.) It’s also worth noting that Curaçao and Cabo Verde are former Dutch and Portuguese colonies, respectively, which gives them access to a much larger player pool connected to two European football powerhouses. In short, it’s remarkable that we are even here.

Most of our players going to the World Cup will get a great chance to gain exposure and get an opportunity to make a solid transfer. However I think the player with the most to gain is Ivan Bašić, his contract with Astana expires at the end of the year. He’s been fantastic since joining the club. A players who has been a level above the clubs he’s been with for a couple of years now. A solid showing on the world’s biggest stage should be enough to grant him a move to a bigger club/league. He was linked with clubs from Zweite but decided to go to Astana and honestly it wasn’t a bad move, he’s been able to showcase his ability well. It’s very plausible that with some solid performances in the World Cup that he gets a move to a T5 league.

Don’t forget the importance of Haris Tabaković in this team. He’s the one who gave us hope against Austria & Italy, and every time we’re behind, he is that 12th man. Made his debut at 29 in the 4–1 loss to Luxembourg, then went through a season where he was barely used, but only now is he starting to deliver. He’s deadly in the box, but can also contribute deeper with his hold-up and link-up play, and he has a level of understanding in combinations and movement that most people underestimate.

As per NY times, ticket sales for Switzerland vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina are around 47,000. By comparison, Iran vs. Belgium has sold just over 50,000. However, let’s not forget that there is a large Iranian diaspora in Los Angeles (approximately 500,000 Iranians live in and around LA). The first game is a bit underwhelming due to the extremely high ticket prices (and Toronto not being the most attractive host city either), but I wouldn’t be surprised if we reach 40,000 for the LA/Seattle games. That said, I really think we will have an incredible crowd at this World Cup. (bold statement: Not sure if any European country will match our numbers in the group stage)

Over the span of his two years as Canada coach, @jessemarsch has used more than 40 players, but the heaviest minutes have gone to the group identified below. This leads to several issues for Marsch and 🇨🇦Canada: - 🧤Goalkeeper question He has rotated between Dayne St. Clair (Inter Miami) and Maxime Crépeau (Orlando City SC), which is why neither appears among the most-used players. The wider Canadian fanbase likely favors St. Clair; however, it would not be surprising if the more experienced Crépeau gets the nod. One key point is that Crépeau is relatively short for a goalkeeper at 1.80 m. - 🚑Injury status Moïse Bombito is dealing with a long-term injury (a broken leg) and has not played since early October 2025. Although he has had a few setbacks, Canada still hopes to have him available. Even so, it seems unlikely that they will rely on him in the early stages (especially in the match against us). He is a crucial part of the defense, and his absence would be a clear advantage. The backup options are not close to his level of quality. Alistair Johnston, the right-back, has effectively been out since August 2025. He briefly returned in October but only for a few minutes, likely too soon. Canada is currently trying to resolve the situation at right-back. In recent matches, Niko Sigur (Hajduk Split) has filled the role. He is more of a hybrid defensive midfielder/right-back, focused on defensive duties rather than playing as an attacking wing-back. With the comeback of Alphonso Davies, Richie Laryea could probably move back to RB while Davies is the LB. A few other important players carry question marks. Promise David, a dangerous striker for Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium, is pushing for a World Cup spot, but it may come down to the wire. Tani Oluwaseyi, another strong attacking option who plays for Villarreal, has struggled for consistent playing time in Spain (though, as we’ve seen in other cases, that does not necessarily reflect ability). - ➕Positive developments On a more positive note for Canada, several former rotational players are improving. Liam Millar is having an excellent season at Hull City under 🇧🇦Sergej Jakirović, and Ali Ahmed of Norwich City has also been in good form, recently taking set pieces for Canada 🇨🇦 I will provide a deeper analysis of the key players later. For now, it is fair to say that Canada has a very strong core of six to seven players at an international top level (arguably) stronger than our own core. However, the squad lacks depth beyond that group.

One of the biggest questions for Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇦 is how Canada 🇨🇦 has improved so dramatically on set pieces and what role Arsenal FC has played in that. The answer is Nicolas Gagnon, Canada’s set-piece coach, who was hired in May 2025 by Jesse Marsch after his team had scored just one set-piece goal in their first 15 matches. Since then, the numbers have improved significantly: Canada has scored five set-piece goals and created multiple clear-cut chances. •Ukraine 🇺🇦⚽️ 4–2 •Honduras 🇭🇳⚽️ 6–0 •Curaçao 🇨🇼⚽️ 1–1 •Romania 🇷🇴⚽️ 3–0 •Wales 🏴⚽️ 1–0 Gagnon comes from the coaching tree of Nicolas Jover, the architect behind Arsenal’s reputation as a “set-piece machine.” The two met during their studies in 2005 at Université de Sherbrooke and have remained close ever since. In a podcast, Gagnon even mentioned that it was Jover who once tried to help him secure a job at Malmö. It’s therefore fair to say that Canada’s set-piece approach is heavily influenced by what we see in the Premier League.

Don’t get me wrong: there is nothing revolutionary about what Canada is doing, even if it is influenced by Arsenal FC. Screening the goalkeeper is quite common in modern football. However, we all know that our aerial dominance is partly due to our height advantage and the fact that opponents often struggle to beat the near-post defender (usually Edin Džeko). The Arsenal approach is specifically designed to “pin” this first defender and prevent him from jumping, which ultimately creates dangerous situations in the six-yard box. In my opinion, we should still have the aerial advantage in this match, as we statistically have the second-tallest team in the tournament 🇧🇦. Nevertheless, Canada’s set-piece situations must be handled with caution.

We are working with a relatively small sample size, as Nicolas Gagnon was only hired in May 2025. However, as we have already seen at top clubs, one of his team’s variations involves overloading the 5-meter-box and indirectly blocking the goalkeeper. By legally obstructing the goalkeeper, the probability of scoring increases, as the goalkeeper is hindered from coming out or punching the ball clear. This particular scene has resulted in goals for both teams.

🇨🇦🇧🇦 Let's deep dive into Red Bull's respectively @jessemarsch 🇨🇦pressing philosophy which can be summed up in an acronym. As he mentioned in an interview in May 2021, the letters S.A.R.D stand for: S = Sprinting ⚡️ He wants his players to run a lot and above all, to run with high intensity. This is a style of football that has grown massively in recent years, particularly through Red Bull. Off-the-ball movement and work rate are especially important. A = All together (Alle gemeinsam) 🅰️ More ball-oriented than man-oriented. This concept is key to his “net,” which he has mentioned several times in tactical analysis shows. He wants his players to stay close to each other when pressing, so they can win second balls when needed. R = Going in (reingehen) 👊🏻 This is more about mentality: going all the way, until the very end. That’s the essence of the “R.” D = Joining in (dazukommen) 🚸 Every pressing action is supported by nearby teammates. As mentioned above, this increases the likelihood of regaining possession. Jesse Marsch’s focus is primarily on the game without the ball: another key takeaway from his Red Bull education under Ralf Rangnick. Regardless of the opponent, there are no major differences in his approach to possession. The aim is to win the ball as early as possible, ideally in the opponent’s first phase (zone 1). When possession is regained in zone 2, the team looks to attack the goal immediately through quick transition play and especially using fast players, which Canada has in abundance. (The players themselves and a potential starting XI will be discussed in a separate thread.) As already mentioned, Red Bull football has left its mark across Europe and now even around the world. Many coaches today learn from or take inspiration from a style of football that has also proven to be successful. As Bosnians, we have someone in our ranks who should know this kind of football very well. With @MironMuslic , we have a coach who has done outstanding work using a very similar playing style.
