@TheExilesNet

Authentic observation on entertainment and culture that is hopefully relatable but nuanced. https://t.co/XaR59dWuug

@TheExilesNet There’s a book that just came out called The Metamodern Films of Taika Waititi. My supervisor suggested that I look into it to help inform my own thesis.

With full seriousness, I don’t think any contemporary filmmaker has let me down more than Taika Waititi. 😔

@DCTalks1009 Ok. Fair enough. If you think my behavior is all of those things, according to my beliefs, it is completely fine for you to air your feelings, as scathing, targeted, and individual as it may be.

@TheExilesNet I have no doubt you find casting others as inferior, hypocritical or otherwise awful is "stimulating". It's what those same miserable people do, because it alleviates that feeling. Again, this is all a choice.

In the past week I saw Hoppers, Project Hail Mary, and revisited John Wick 4. I’ve seen the public responses to the first two in theaters but formed my own views. I’ve been very happy with all. If all you do is police/pick apart discourse, you will *not* be happy.

🧵 This is not a direct comment about OP, but I notice that people who complain the most about "how horrible things are right now" also say things like this. They are often a proponent of "Whimsy not being cringe". It's just toxic positivity with extra steps. 1/3

People have this ridiculous idea that if art offends them that's bad thing. Not only that, they think the offending art should be banned or not made at all. Their brains have been fried by Disney movies and kiddie crap, they don't know what art is

@DCTalks1009 I think you're projecting "misery" onto me. It seems you are assigning a real-world pathos to an online interaction that maybe took less than 10 minutes for me to draft. Not to mention, I find it stimulating. I think it just feels bad for you to read it.

@TheExilesNet I think it’s entirely a waste of time for someone as thoughtful as you. Misery is a choice. Complaining about stranger things for months is a choice. It’s based on grievances and it’s a waste of time. I didn’t jive with true detective season 2. I moved on quite quickly

💯 Mythology and the spectacle of that mythology is why we like Zack as a director. Our world and history is based in myth. As a kid. those were the films that grabbed my attention. While Zack is not the only dir. Who can tell a mythic story, his style is what makes him unique

On a general level, that's like asking "What makes fillet mignon better than a plate of kitty litter?" But to boil it down to one thing, Snyder's predilection for mythic storytelling and grandiose action is what made me such a fan of his, both of which are all over ZSJL.

If there are different forms of intelligence, that would explain this phenomenon. I do regularly think about this subject though. Also, I'm critical of anyone who claims to be smart. Most of the time what they likely mean is "aware" which I can confirm is a curse.
yuzu@yuzu_4ever

i am always suspicious of people who claim to be smart but are miserable. if they really were that smart, they would have figured out how to live a joyous life.

@DCTalks1009 Ok. Is your criticism of me, the way I criticized (as you claim) people/groups that engage in (as I claim) "toxic positive behaviors" online, or that I made the criticism at all? And if your issue is the former, how would you rework the criticism to make it more palatable?

@TheExilesNet That suggests that you’re not at all aware of what you’re saying, how it comes off, and have no interest at all in learning. You’re free to feel that way naturally: but when you try and talk about it at first, it seems you are interested in that… until you realize what you said.

5 years ago today, Zack Snyder's Justice League hit HBO Max 🖤 In your opinion, what makes the Snyder cut better than the original?

@DCTalks1009 I find what you are doing (what you regularly do), is tone police me. I do no think it is valuable and I find that you rarely contribute or add to conversation. You just complain that other people have grievances and want to explore it.

@TheExilesNet You’re not criticizing the OP, just an entire group of people who all act in the manner described. It’s not an idea, but a group

@DCTalks1009 I started my post by acknowledging that I had nothing against the OP. I am criticizing the idea, not an individual. I do not feel that I have done anything wrong, I wasn't even rude about it. I am just having a serious conversation/dialogue.

@DCTalks1009 I have not claimed that people will never change. I'm usually just making observations. "I have noticed XYZ. Here are my thoughts, what I like and dislike, theories and musings." That's my whole thing.

@TheExilesNet It doesn’t make me happy. It’s a waste of time from someone who has a lot more to offer than complaining about how people talk who will never change. I find so much worthy of engaging on here outside of that.

@TheExilesNet Criticisms and attempts to address "modern cynicism" are worthless because they don't engage with why people are so "cynical" or why they find that a better response. I also agree those making these claims are far more cynical and insincere than those they criticize.

"It's a deconstruction of the superhero genre", "It's satire", "If superheroes were realistic" and then it's actually just pretty standard capeshit but edgy

@TheExilesNet I have to admit I've kind of avoided *those* shows as their edgy reputation precedes their deconstructive value in my head. I may be missing something but it's like they devalue that realism and contribute to hopecore propaganda

Bane creator Graham Nolan on James Gunn's Superman movie: "Superman has one histrionic outburst after another and wonders why he’s mistrusted? Way too beta. His parents are from Kansas and sound and act like they were inbred in Kentucky. It’s a narrative mess as scenes jump confusingly. Too many characters with no intro to who they are. I know Steve Lombard’s background but a normy doesn’t. Perry White smokes a cigar with no smoke or ash Calling fight plays during a fight? That’s idiotic. We never see Metamorpho do anything to break up the war at the end, yet there he is all of a sudden. I have one unbreakable rule when it comes to movies and entertainment: make me care! I’ll buy all kinds of bullshit you are selling if I care about the characters and stakes. For SUPERMAN…I didn’t care." Is he right?
