🔒 When it comes to network security a layered approach is often recommended, however it can lead to complexity. 🔬 #XDR is a #security methodology with a goal of ingesting and correlating events to alert and take action on potential security incidents. #network #networking #IT

📖 Big changes don't always happen overnight. Oftentimes, they take small, deliberate modifications repeated time and time again. I recently finished the book 'Atomic Habits' from James Clear. I really enjoyed it and picked up the recommendation of habit stacking. #book #books

Just finished up "The Stranger In The Woods" by @MikeFinkel. I can't imagine someone spending 27 years in the wilderness with practically no human contact. This was a great listen!

@juangolbez My mind was stuck specifically on traditional routers. The firewall and load balancer examples make sense. Thanks Tim!

@TimBertino The value of proxy arp is being able to answer for workloads that cant answer for themselves because of an L3 boundary. FWs can do this for protected resources to force traffic to go through it, also to answer ARP for subnets behind it that won't see the ARP.

Can anyone give some examples of production network use cases that would require proxy ARP? Just trying to understand what scenarios it would make sense.

@TimBertino Common in ISPs to isolate subscribers from each other but keep them in a common subnet for IPv4. Every subscriber is put into a different VLAN on an access network and proxy arp is used to provide reachability to the BNG gw for the subnet.

@SharpNetwork This is why I like posting these questions here. I get perspectives different from my own. Thanks!

@TimBertino Here’s a good one. Hybrid subnets in Google Cloud. We’ve had customers use this approach for migration. It’s often unpalatable to traditional network engineers but it solves a real problem. cloud.google.com/vpc/docs/hybri…

@TimBertino The last time I used proxy arp was with dialup gear. Let's say you have a /24 and 4 devices with 2 t1s each. The gear and pool was in same subnet. Each device had a pool of lets say 48 ip addresses. It is a simple way to do things but does not scale.

It can be a very humbling experience to watch people work who have different skill sets from you. Among many other things, I definitely feel this way with vehicle/automotive work. I have a lot of respect for the mechanical mind.
