Time to play some "Stunts"! We used to have fucking INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENTS of it in 2004-7.

At one point I actually managed to FRY my computer (smoke and everything!) after rebooting it too many times trying to play Grim Fandango in half the minimum specs.

After literal MONTHS of trying I managed to get an offline deathmach going on Brutal Doom, and... it's the best thing ever.

I remember how beautiful it was to get the link cable function to work on the old, DOS-based No$GB emulator. Finally securing those pesky trade-only Pokémon? Actually fighting a friend? Legendary feelings.

DosBox was the most mind-blowing development I remember from the early aughts. Suddenly all of us Abandonware nerds could play our favorite games again after making the forced transition to XP and beyond.

Sometimes I marvel at people's uncanny ability to take a great idea and run it to the ground. Examples galore.

I remember when I came back to my favorite forum after an extended break and found that it had been "updated" from PhPBB2 to vBulletin... I was SO lost looking into it, trying to navigate it. And the new reputation/karma system was already causing unheard-of amounts of drama.

I like how nearly-unlimited power has limited videogames like no other development in history. We could make huge and intricate games on a few MHZ of processing power and single-digit RAM values, but now everything is one impressive-looking BOX.

I like how new Abandonware sites play it bold and don't even pretend that what they are doing is 100% legal anymore... playing nice, removing games whenever some fucking lawyer requested it, where did all that submission got them? To extinction, that's where.

Remember "Flogs"? Those were the kind of internet development I loved to witness... not quite a blog, not quite Instagram, and often coming across as crash between the two. Fun times indeed.

I used to write reviews for an Abandonware site that shall remain nameless, and at some point I realized that those weren't getting any traction... why? Because the latest wave of new users hadn't even heard of them, let alone played them. Absolute gut punch, man.
