In shameful contradistinction to Starmer’s failure to raise defence spending, even Neville Chamberlain, as he tried and failed to appease Nazi Germany in the late Thirties, saw the need to ramp up rearmament. It grew from roughly 3% of GDP in the mid 1930s to over 7% by 1938, even as Chamberlain was trying to negotiate with Hitler, approaching 9–10% before mobilisation in 1939. Starmer is struggling to reach 2.5%.
