Ilya founded SSI with the plan to do a straight shot to Artificial Super Intelligence. No intermediate products, no intermediate model releases. Many people (me included) saw this as unlikely to work since if you get the flywheel spinning on models / products, you can build a real moat. However, the success of scaling test time compute (which Ilya likely saw early signs of) is a good indication that this direct path to just continuing to scale up might actually work. We are still going to get AGI, but unlike the consensus from 4 years ago that it would be this inflection point moment in history, it’s likely going to just look a lot like a product release, with many iterations and similar options in the market within a short period of time (which fwiw is likely the best outcome for humanity, so personally happy about this).

Sam is honestly 5 steps ahead of everyone. The only reason OpenAI is able to function with all the demand is because of Azure's compute. Sam knows it, and why they signed the deal. But if you read the details, the deal with MSFT specifically only applies to pre-AGI technology So what happens when you achieve AGI? You become a competitor to EVERY SINGLE COMPANY in the world. We will live in a post scarcity world, assuming OAI achieves their goal. You can kill Google, MSFT, etc. However you need 1 thing: hardware. Thats why Sam has been on a fundraising mission in the middle east, specifically recently. Sam knows that you cannot achieve his vision by being dependent on any compute provider. No tech company will provide gpusm, just for you to kill their company You MUST have your own compute and hardware to get an AGI which can help everyone in the world, there is no other way. with sam and greg ousted yesterday my initial thought yesterday was “shit they have discovered AGI” and the only person who was capable of understanding it was ilya sutskever. now it’s seems even more an more plausible that is the case. to understand the amount of stress and pressure he must have been under i urge you to watch this short documentary. this was recorded during the development of chatGPT. but the sincere stream of thought about the greater good AND the bad that will come from AI might put it more clear to why this might have happened. my thesis, they have had AGI internally for a while, and Ilya, andrej karpathy might have been the first ones to grasp what they have made. to be clear, geoff hinton regrets his life’s work (the work on AI) due to him worry about all the bad it can be used for. maybe ilya is under similar pressure. to much for one person to bear. regardless, we will know more soon. i feel for all involved parties, and for the community at large. this is not great.

Most people don't know this, but you can create custom parameters in Midjourney. Say you put "--ar 16:9 --stylize 150 --weird 25 --style raw" at the end of every cinematic prompt. You can create a parameter called --cinematic that automatically adds those settings. Here's how
