He told me he had a big business opportunity to discuss with me. I said, “Okay, no problem.” He told me he had traveled to Bauchi because one of his friends connected him with some people who wanted to sell about 40 bundles of dollars. He said nobody trusted him enough for the deal, so he decided to call me instead. Immediately, I thanked him. He said the opportunity was good and asked me to come to Bauchi because he didn’t have enough cash to pay them, but he believed I had money available. I said yes, that was true. He explained that for every bundle they wanted ₦5 million. I calculated quickly and realized the profit on just one bundle would be around ₦9 million. I became excited and even started imagining doing giveaways of cows on Facebook. But later I stopped and thought carefully. I asked myself, “Could these people actually be thieves? Where did they get all these dollars from?” I reasoned that anyone with that amount of dollars would already know where to sell them legally. That thought kept bothering me. I immediately called a senior security officer in Kano and explained everything happening. Straight away, he told me they were criminals and that this was their usual trick. He warned me that if I went there, they would either rob or kidnap me because they had no mercy. Even after that, I still wanted to see how the whole thing would end and also help rescue my friend who had already gone ahead with the deal. Then I remembered I knew a respected Islamic scholar, Datti Assalafy. I called him and explained everything. Immediately, he began telling me about these people. He said this kind of scam was currently trending around the Bauchi road area and that such people are commonly called “Yan Chanji” (fake currency dealers). Mallam Datti Assalafy told me to wait until around 12: 00 and then tell them I had arrived in Bauchi and ask where we should meet. He said before then he would arrange security officers to arrest all of them. So later, as planned, I called my friend and told him to ask the suspects to come meet us. But they refused to come into town. Instead, they insisted we should meet them in another village area inside a remote place. Datti immediately said the place was likely in the bush. Meanwhile, throughout all these conversations, I was actually still in Kano lying comfortably in my room. But my friend believed I had already arrived in Bauchi and checked into a hotel, waiting for the “currency exchange deal.” The criminals refused to come into town for the transaction. At that point, I finally told my friend the truth — that these people were criminals and not genuine currency dealers.
