The French Revolution of 1789 played a major role in inspiring notions of greater liberty globally, and lead initially to demands for greater rights and finally the abolition of slavery itself in Saint-Domingue (present day Haiti). What we know of the past is partly down to luck. The writings and objects that remain suitably intact and in a format we can read. How much of our world today will still be readable in 50 or 100 years’ time? How will people in the future see us?
