@GreatDiadochi And also the fact that they weren't very aggressive towards Rome is due to them being a decentralized empire, where the King of Kings depended on the support of the nobles to make a decision. One thing I admire is that they lasted so long being a decentralized empire.

@GreatDiadochi In Parthian art, frontality means that human figures (in paintings, sculptures, reliefs, or even coins) are represented facing forward, looking directly at the viewer. This became the standard and normal way of portraying people, and not something exceptional in this period. +

The best civilizations. In the case of Russia, I included it because of the Novgorod Republic and the Principality/Tsardom of Moscow up to Alexios I Romanov.

I love this portrayal of Theodore Metochites in the Chora. He has such a caricatured look with that wild turban-like headgear called a skiadion (literally, sunshade), a symbol of his exalted rank. He was one of the most powerful officials under Andronikos II Palaiologos, serving as his chief advisor (mesazōn) and later as grand logothete during the empire's declining years. He was also probably the greatest scholar of his day (called a "living library"). As a mark of honor, Andronikos II granted him the title of ktetor (founder/patron) of the Chora monastery, which is why he is shown in this famous donor mosaic kneeling before Christ and presenting a model of the restored church. Restoration was carried out with a pure focus on the mosaic images, and the original details and colors, as documented in Paul A. Underwood, The Kariye Djami.

Empress Theodora, based on the San Vitale mosaic while also incorporating her physical description from Procopius. Now Theodora was fair of face and in general attractive in appearance, but short of stature and lacking in colour, being, however, not altogether pale but rather sallow, and her glance was always intense and made with contracted brows

@GreatDiadochi > They expelled the Seleucids from the Iranian plateau and Central Asia. > They confronted the Romans at their peak and won at some moments, such as Carrhae. > Cool Coins. > Partly responsible for the Christianization of the South Caucasus. > Parthian Frontality

@suviesuvorov A coin of Theodosius II, an Eastern Roman emperor, was found in India and a coin of Constantine the Great was also found in Japan. Byzantine coins also circulated widely, from Western Europe to Japan.

@angcathalex The Western (Latin) Church has its own iconography; it's a shame that this isn't explored much nowadays.
