This monk lived for 20+ years on top of a 40 m. (130 ft) sheer rock pillar. Georgia’s Katskhi Pillar is a natural limestone monolith with a tiny medieval church balanced on its summit like something from a fantasy film. It was between the 9th–10th century (roots go back to 6th–8th), home to Christian ascetics called Stylites who prayed closer to God… by living on pillars. In the 1990s, monk Maxime Qavtaradze revived the ancient tradition and lived up there in total isolation until 2015, climbing a steel ladder they call the Stairway to Heaven.
