Closing thoughts: Exercise is underrated! I think we can all do a better job as healthcare professionals and as individuals to encourage movement! #ADEAchat

Our final question for tonight's #ADEAchat Q6. What tips or resources do you have for people with diabetes looking to do more physical activity or for healthcare professionals to support their clients?

@AusDiabetesEd #ADEAchat for those at home at the moment who have limited mobility and can't go to the shops or out for a walk they can do at home exercises in a chair, consider using tin cans of food for weight exercises. Exercise physiologists should be our best friends!

@endoman @AusDiabetesEd Absolutely. Within the capabilities of each person. Support from an exercise physiologist. There is a movement in social prescribing of exercise from GPs #ADEAchat

Now that we've established how exercise can impact #diabetes, let's get into it. Q3. How can health professionals help or support a person with diabetes get started with exercise if they’ve haven’t done physical activity in a while? #ADEAchat

Absolutely. At the same time, it's important not to be too obsessive with tracking as that could lead to disordered behaviours #ADEAchat

@AusDiabetesEd Wearable technology e.g. fitbit, garmin, apple watch can actually be really helpful with motivation. Keep track of steps or alarm when not moving etc. #ADEAchat

@BrookeDevlin @AusDiabetesEd And I think even on days when motivation is low, the hardest part is getting started and often you'll find that you'll pick it up after that. But if not, every little bit counts. #ADEAchat

Sometimes the hardest part of exercising is keeping it going when motivation levels are low... Q5. What tips do you have to keep people motivated and continuously engaged in regular physical activity? #ADEAchat

@AusDiabetesEd Setting up a reward system is helpful for some people. Putting $5 aside every time you exercise to put towards a holiday – when restrictions are lifted! #ADEAchat

Find supportive trainers and gyms or workout spaces/training buddies. I am very picky with the gyms I go to! It's also nice to have training buddies to keep you accountable and motivated #ADEAchat

Exercise can definitely help with insulin sensitivity and can play a part in remission. #ADEAchat
MacroFour@MacroFour

@HangryPancreas It also helps reduce insulin resistance which assists with T2 remission & can deliver a cure for T2DM as insulin resistance appears to be root causal. 2of2 #ADEAChat

To add on to the other great suggestions, I get clients to work on things they're already doing like incidental exercise. Park a little further away, take the stairs instead of the escalator. Little steps add up! #ADEAchat
