I’m so mad at how they sensationalized the news about Cha Eun Woo, damaging his reputation when in reality, it’s not what people made it out to be. He didn’t illegally evade taxes, this wasn’t about hiding income or refusing to pay. The issue was about how his income was structured (personal vs corporate tax). The tax office reviewed it and determined that some parts should have been taxed differently (at a higher personal rate instead of the corporate rate). Also, under the Korean tax system, additional taxes cannot be paid until an official notice is issued by the National Tax Service, so there was no delay or refusal to pay. The widely reported ~20 billion KRW was only an estimate, and the exact amount wasn’t confirmed until the official notice was received. After that, the amount was recalculated, some double-taxed portions were refunded, and he paid the final required amount (~13 billion KRW) immediately. This kind of situation is actually quite common for high earners, celebrities, and business owners. It’s more of a tax adjustment/interpretation issue, not a criminal scandal. He accepted the decision, paid everything, and took responsibility. There’s no indication of deliberate wrongdoing, this situation was clearly overblown.
