For the Brazilian-born actor, who portrayed Pablo Escobar in the series, the role marked his breakthrough with American audiences. It was followed by a critically acclaimed performance in ‘Civil War’ and an award-winning leading role in ‘The Secret Agent’ last year. At the Cannes Film Festival last May, Moura won the Best Actor award for his role in ‘The Secret Agent.’ From there, both the movie and Moura were unstoppable: the film was up for four Academy Awards, including one for Moura’s subtly wrought performance. Moura became the first Brazilian to be nominated for the Best Actor award. Today, Moura is among TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2026.
