The Missing Justice: How the International Community Betrayed Gaza
On the international stage, no modern liberation struggle has faced betrayal as profound as that endured by Gaza. Nor has any genocide in recent memory been met with such brazen complicity and deafening silence. For more than two years, the world embraced the narrative of the occupying power, providing it with political and moral cover that allowed the atrocities to continue unabated. Meanwhile, its military supply chains faced no hindrance—quite the opposite.
Even in the legal arena, states that claim to champion justice and human rights have actively obstructed all efforts to seek accountability—whether at the International Court of Justice or the International Criminal Court.
After two years of entire cities being reduced to rubble, tens of thousands killed on live television, and civilians deliberately starved, the European Union has done little more than consider reviewing its partnership with the genocidal regime. Even the symbolic idea of suspending a marginal scientific cooperation program like Horizon Europe received support from only 10 out of 27 member states.
At the grassroots level, global mobilization has been feeble—a moral failure of the world’s conscience, which has limited itself to tepid demonstrations and hollow statements, absent any serious labor strikes, mass movements, or sustained pressure campaigns.
Today, for more than two months, the same international community has proven incapable of forcing the genocidal regime to allow the humane entry of food, to protect UN humanitarian agencies, or even to safeguard the survival of UNRWA—a dismantlement long envisioned by the Zionist project. The occupation reads this scene well; it fuels the continuation and escalation of the genocide, emboldening it to explore even more brutal scenarios, including the return of settlements, the annexation of Gaza lands, and total domination over the West Bank and Jerusalem.
After two years of systematic annihilation, the most the international community has managed to offer are feeble proposals for a Palestinian state stripped of sovereignty, dignity, and meaning—conditioned on disarmament, obedience, and the complete surrender of historic, political, and moral rights.
Though the Palestinian cause has regained some of its prominence as a global liberation struggle, the occupying regime has largely succeeded in painting Palestinian resistance—and the Palestinian people as a whole—as violent and terrorist, embedding its fabricated narrative in the global discourse.
Understanding the dynamics of global public opinion reveals a harsh truth: solidarity, no matter how widespread, is fleeting unless strategically and immediately channeled. Without organized campaigns that maintain visibility and pressure, even the most just of causes risks vanishing from memory once the headlines fade.
In 1982, global outrage peaked following Israel’s invasion of Lebanon and the Sabra and Shatila massacre—but it quickly evaporated, and Israel resumed normalized relations with impunity. In 2008, Gaza witnessed a surge of global support, only to see it dissipate as soon as the assault ended.
Today, even as the word “genocide” is more frequently associated with Gaza, the danger of global forgetfulness looms—just as it did with the Rohingya in Myanmar in 2018, or Namibia in 1971, when the ICJ declared South Africa’s occupation illegal, a ruling left unheeded for two decades.
Just causes do not triumph by virtue of their justice alone, nor by the number of hashtags or online sympathizers, but through the ability of their people to sustain momentum, build pressure, and seize the moment.
The world has no memory—it moves with the moment. And if that moment is not wisely and forcefully seized, it will fade, like a wave lost in the vast ocean of forgetfulness.
