this - and our Government in the UK allows it to be sprayed on oil seed rape etc., so imagine the huge assault on insects that is actually going on. Hardly a bee around despite warm conditions and nectar rich flowers.

I agree this is very important. The #Neonicotinoid #insecticides are invisible, long-lasting and KILL so many insects.

@simongarrard2 @JenniGoldsmith Well, #birds need food and #insects are the food of many birds. If the insects are declining fast the birds will follow.

@bardofely @JenniGoldsmith Our birdlife like our insect life is in serious trouble . The worry is does anyone in Goverment care . Its the start of some very grim problems . Perhaps all these kids who have taken up bird watching, and good for them should ask their MPs what they are going to do .

@simongarrard2 @JenniGoldsmith As an angler you will no doubt be witnessing the serious decline of many species. The #freshwater in lakes and #rivers in the UK is very often seriously polluted and so too are coastal waters. Often with #sewage, as well as agricultural runoff and #pesticides.

@Carolemoonbeam I read labels. I think people and #pets too are being fed a lot of unhealthy, toxic rubbish, so it is no surprise to me that so many people and pets get sick. An unhealthy population makes BIG money for #BigPharma!

this - always read the labels. The food industry loves this oil along with palm and other nasties we would never use ourselves.

Why is @TaylorWimpey felling mature & veteran #trees in #Newcastle during bird nesting season? #Bats roost in these #trees. Why has @NewcastleCC allowed such widespread ecological destruction of #trees, #woodlands, hedgerows & #wildlife?

I remember when #Starlings were so common small flocks would arrive in a back garden if you threw some scraps out for the #birds. They are amazing birds that can sing so well.

The starling population has declined by 82% from 1970 to today. The causes include- loss of food/reduced grassland, urbanisation/reduced juvenile survival/modern building design etc. We could reverse this, but the starling isn't seen as sexy or charismatic. Poor ol' things.

This- not only does it kill the bees and insects but we ourselves use the oil in our food chain! It’s a total disgrace!

@snapgreenben Thanks, Ben! There were several Meadow Browns, a #PaintedLady, and some species of skipper #butterfly all feeding on a group of Field Scabious flowers. Also large numbers of some species of red mite on the flowers.

Very Important Message!! Do NOT, and I repeat do not buy plants treated with Neonicotinoids. Bees take the pollen back to the hive and feed it to the brood. This is a number one cause of the colony collapse. It's important to NOT buy these plants! Make sure to share this post!

@2BJDJ This is a massive problem! People do not realise they are killing #bees and other #pollinators when they buy pretty flowers for their gardens, if the plants they buy are contaminated with #Neonicotinoids.

@JenniGoldsmith Yes, like #housesparrows and #swift, starlings were once a bird that used many houses as places to nest. When I was a boy both those other species were as common as the starlings. All are now in a serious decline.

@bardofely I have a couple of dozen or more frequenting my back garden. They nest in my loft each year.
My car is always covered in poo & I have to refill the bird baths twice a day cos they group bathe, but I wouldn't change things! 😀

I found these little chaps in a plastic container thrown into a roadside ditch! Bottles, jars, containers etc. can be lethal to wildlife, especially amphibians and small mammals. It was luckily discarded into a cool, damp ditch, not in full sun. Bin it. Conservation@althorp.com
