Staff at @MaplewoodElemen surprised principal @NickpettitNKC with exciting news – he is the Missouri Administrator of the Year, presented by @myMSCA! He was chosen for his amazing support of the school’s counseling program & focus on advocating for students. Congrats, Mr. Pettit!

Yes! This! 100% this. Check those book boxes for appropriate, independent level and decodable texts!

Sometimes the part of problem is as simple as the fact we (the system, or the teachers or the programs) have not afforded the students the number of practices opportunities that they need.

All sports moms feel this, right?!

Mom, Here’s a few pictures from photo day. Sorry I couldn’t get you the dozens of different size photos and magnets. Unfortunately they didn’t offer that package this year. ps. thanks for always reminding me to smile big. Baseball is fun!

3rd graders and I were working on sounds to say for -ed. Trying it out on the word “turned”a kiddo said “turnt”. I said I wasn’t cool enough to use that word. Students didn’t know what I meant but @NickpettitNKC thought it was funny! #formalobservation 🤦🏻♀️ #guidedreadingisfun

@TeachMrsJudd I think our district does a great job with the “what”. Our curriculum is comprehensive, I believe. The “how” is the hard part. More teachers as interventionists? smaller classes? more small group instruction? Better, data-driven, outcomes-based interventions?

So much great info on how research supports the need for comprehensive literacy instruction in the early grades. Phonics first or phonics only? | Shanahan on Literacy @AndiEatinger @jkssutton_jks @NickpettitNKC @LongMkl8 shanahanonliteracy.com/blog/what-do-y…

@Bowrena @AndiEatinger @jkssutton_jks @NickpettitNKC @LongMkl8 Dang. Now I wish I would have signed up for it!!
English

@AndiEatinger @beth102c @jkssutton_jks @NickpettitNKC @LongMkl8 As teachers who have taught children to read, we know the complexities of the process to help kids be true readers. I agree with many parts of the blog. I just didn’t like the way he lumped LETRS training in there. It is by far the best PD I’ve ever had as an educator.
English

@Bowrena @AndiEatinger @jkssutton_jks @NickpettitNKC @LongMkl8 And most importantly, well- trained, knowledgeable teachers who are in tune with their readers’ strengths and weaknesses. Tough gig for clsrm teachers. That’s why I love colab’ing with them and intervening to support readers ❤️
English

@Bowrena @AndiEatinger @jkssutton_jks @NickpettitNKC @LongMkl8 The social media “reading wars” did a big disservice to reading ed. For most primary teachers, it’s not a binary choice, all or no phonics. That’s ridiculous. Strong curriculum with systematic phonics + all other important literacy components. Balance. 1/
English

@Bowrena @AndiEatinger @jkssutton_jks @NickpettitNKC @LongMkl8 I didn’t read about his thoughts on LETRS. I must have missed it. Systematic phonics is vitally important in primary grades. But teaching meaning-making along side phonics makes the most sense to me. Also, teach the reader, not reading. Miss you, friend!❤️
English

@beth102c @AndiEatinger @jkssutton_jks @NickpettitNKC @LongMkl8 I read this last week and didn’t like the way he through LETRS training in there like it is promoting phonics only, it’s not. After implementing some changes last year from LETRS, I would say explicit phonics is the most important part for K-1. Thoughts?

Deputy Iggy is an awesome addition to the @MaplewoodElemen Family. And we are all falling in love with Csibi (Chebee). Such a good boy!
