Big thanks to @SERVIR_PERU for the invite to 5 Minutes to Serve! Great to exchange ideas with SERVIR's Director on how data can strengthen Peru’s public administration - perhaps, in time, even with a National Survey of Public Servants.

In OECD countries, performance-based pay & promotions boost bureaucrats' job satisfaction — but not in lower-income countries. A cautionary tale about exporting management practices to the Global South. Evidence from an original survey with 19,000+ bureaucrats in 10 countries. ↓

Early organizations of city government employees, especially firefighters, helped to influence the adoption of municipal civil service throughout the U.S. in the early 20th century. Happy to see this article with @trounstine in @apsrjournal!

So excited that CLAD's 23 member countries approved the Latin American Charter for Measuring and Analysing Public Administration Data, which I coordinated w/ Dan Rogger. In the Charter, countries recognize & strive for key good practices to measure their public administration.

Good government data requires good statistics officials – but how motivated & competent are they? Our survey of 13,300 statistics officials finds many are motivated, but struggle with basic statistical competencies. Find out more in our @worldbankdata blog blogs.worldbank.org/en/opendata/go…

Thrilled to share my new paper, “Calibrating Autonomy,” co-authored with @FukuyamaFrancis, now in print at @Gov_Journal. This research journey started when I read his seminal piece "What is Governance?" as a grad student. I loved this graph—and immediately envisioned testing his theory empirically at the agency level. 🧵 1/

based on a conversation with @paulnovosad: a philanthropic fund I would really like to exist is one that focuses on improved administrative data. (You can't improve state capacity without understanding the state of the world!) Does this exist anywhere?

@GeorgeBert @apoliticalco @WorldBank Thanks, Bert. We touch upon that, in terms of specific functions (e.g. we have sessions on HRM data analytics, which is crucial for strategic workforce planning) and to more generally understand organizational strengths and areas for improvement - cf. ch. 5 in your great book😀
