14 years on, I still don't think that PA's should be diagnosing patients with undifferentiated symptoms. This is a bloody difficult thing to do , even with years of medical education and apprenticeship. I am waiting for people to acknowledge this.

Wes Streeting keeps repeating the claim that the BMA expects him to fix everything for resident doctors in two years. That’s simply not true. Doctors have consistently called for restoration of our real terms pay over time; not overnight. That’s been clear from the start. For context, that would mean a fully qualified foundation year one doctor moving from around £19.27/hr to £22.67/hr. What we’ve actually seen instead from the Government is an offer that risks locking in future real terms pay cuts, reduces the investment on the table while stretching it over three years, and a Health Secretary that has made the political decision to remove 1,000 extra GP and Consultant training jobs. That’s not good faith negotiation from the Government. It’s moving the goalposts yet again at the last minute. It’s time for @wesstreeting to put forward a credible offer on both jobs and pay, not continue to grandstand in the media.

🔴 Physician Assistants nearly killed another patient in GP land. They prescribed amitriptyline to a patient with diverticulitis and fobbed him off with a depression diagnosis. He was later rushed to the hospital for an emergency laparotomy 💀☠️ ⭕️ PAs don’t know how to perform a proper abdominal exam. ⭕️ They typically fob off patients with any diagnosis due to a poor knowledge base. ⭕️ This man ended up with a lifelong disability and a stoma in situ. This is verging on criminality, and the GMC won’t do anything as usual.

While frontline health services struggle, private firms providing services to the NHS made a £1.6bn profit in two years. This money could have paid for 9,178 doctors or 19,428 nurses during the same time period. All hail @PrivateEyeNews Brilliant story about how one of the proposed new owners of Thames Water is offering up a £25 million "Community Benefit Trust" (CBT) to "support" local environment and community groups but only on condition that TW are exempt from environment law and any threat of prosecution for at least the next 5 years. In other words we'll pay a £25 million bribe to local river groups and charities to shut them up, it's hush money, it's blood money, it's a bride. The Evenlode Catchment Partnership (ECP) knows better of course, they've already handed back £135K to Thames Water after they realised they were simply been used and the only people benefiting from the arrangement was Thames Water. Other river charities would do well to follow ECP's example, don't accept the hush money, don't accept the blood money, it is after all nothing more than a bribe.

In 2014, my son was battling cancer. At one point, we were desperately looking for O-negative blood, a rare type, and time was not on our side. It was the first time I turned to social media. Until then, it was just a page. Nothing more. But that day, it became something else. People responded. People shared. People prayed. And it meant more to me than I can ever express. From Bint Jbeil, from the heart of the South. Her son drove her for hours, 5 hours, just to reach us. I remember them walking into that small salon where we were sitting. I was with my brother. She looked at me and said: “I know you are looking for this blood type. I have it. I asked my son to bring me. We searched for you in Beirut’s hospitals … and now we found you. I am here to give my blood to your son”. She came to give life … to my son. And this is the first time, I talk about it, even to my wife. These are the people of the South. Today, the South is being destroyed, villages are being erased. And I cannot help but think of her and of so many others like her. This is my country. These are my people. From every region, every village, every belief. And in my own way, as a human being, and through my voice, I will always stand by every suffering, every pain, every cry for help.
