Originality is way overrated.

The waitress had her pen ready and her eyes on mine, and in that holy moment my ears betrayed me. "Soup or salad?" What I heard was: "Super salad?" A super salad. Of course this country has one. This is the land of bottomless bread and refills that never end. Somewhere back in that kitchen a salad of legend was waiting, and she was offering it to me, plainly, on a Tuesday. "Yes," I said, and squared my shoulders. "The super salad. I am ready for it." "...okay, but. Soup? Or salad?" She was testing whether I was worthy of it. So I steadied my voice. "Bring me the super salad." We went around like this three more times. The man in the next booth set down his fork to watch. At last she gave up and brought me a small bowl of lettuce with one wedge of tomato. I studied it from two angles. "This is the super salad?" "That's the salad, hon." At home I would have bowed, apologized for my foolish ears, and quietly wished to disappear. But before the shame could take me, the old man at the counter turned around on his stool. "Been ordering the super salad forty years, son. Don't let nobody tell you it ain't real." We gave each other one slow nod. Two believers in a room full of doubt. A man does not ask a salad to be real. He orders it until it is. I order it by its true name now, every visit. The waitress writes "salad," then says "one super salad" out loud for me, because she is kind, and because by now the whole diner is in on the legend. It comes free with any meal here. A salad with that kind of power, handed over like it costs nothing. I do not think you know how lucky you are. I am grateful for it every single time.

Classical Marxism failed because the working class refused to revolt. So the left did something far more effective - they abandoned the working class entirely. One of the most significant developments in modern leftist thought was the shift from traditional Marxism to Critical Studies - an approach built explicitly around group identity and the demand for active political struggle. It is the dominant intellectual framework in much of today’s academia, media and corporate culture. At its core, it is an extension and radicalisation of the Critical Theory developed by the Frankfurt School in the 1930s. Critical Theory argued that Western society maintains its power not primarily through economics, but through culture, ideas, language and institutions that shape how people think. Since the spontaneous revolution Marx expected didn’t arrive, it would have to be actively forced through the systematic critique and dismantling of these “oppressive structures”. Revolution, in other words, became something that must be consciously engineered. This approach exploded in the 1970s and 80s with the rise of Critical Legal Studies. Scholars argued that law was not neutral but an instrument of power used by the dominant class to maintain control. That opened the floodgates. Soon came Critical Race Theory, Critical Gender Studies, Critical Pedagogy. All of them share the same core project: identifying hidden systems of oppression based on race, gender, class and sexuality, and demanding active intervention to achieve “equity” (equality of outcome) rather than mere equality of rights. We now call this "woke". That the revolution must be forced to happen is why modern critical theory is so explicitly activist. As Ibram X. Kendi put it: “It is not enough to not be racist; we must be actively anti-racist.” Passivity is seen as complicity. Neutrality is impossible. Education, under Critical Pedagogy, is no longer about teaching knowledge but about turning students into political activists who view society through the lens of power and oppression. Critical Studies’ deeply anti-individual core replaces the idea of the sovereign individual with group identity and collective guilt. It rejects objective truth, merit and colour-blind liberalism in favour of power analysis and enforced equity. What began as a marginal academic project has become a powerful ideological machine that now dominates government policy, corporate hiring and education systems across the West.

Tough loss for the Scots but hearing Flower of Scotland live was worth it. A remarkable run for Scotland in Boston sadly comes to a close. The Tartan Army will live on forever though in the history of Boston sports. What a special week.

Netherlands v Sweden: Three's a crowd Overloading defenders in the final third creates opportunities to get unmarked players on the ball in dangerous areas. A 3v2 overload on the edge of the penalty area allows Denzel Dumfries to cross without pressure while Netherlands attackers ensure a 3v3 at the back post. Left-winger Cody Gakpo arrives on the blindside of his defender to score their third goal.

Paul Scholes on Japan’s 4-0 victory over Tunisia at the World Cup: 🗣️ “When I watch Japan, I don’t see a team playing above their level anymore. I see a team playing at their level and that level is extremely high, built on years of tactical education, discipline, and collective understanding.” “A 4-0 result at the World Cup is never accidental. It is the product of control, structure, and players who understand the game in a very intelligent way, both with and without the ball.” “What makes them special is not just the intensity, but the clarity. Every movement has a purpose, every press has perfect timing, and every pass is played with intention and awareness of what comes next.” “People still hesitate to call them favourites, but that is only because of history and reputation. On the pitch, there is no hesitation from Japan at all they play with full conviction.” “I’ve seen many teams in football that start tournaments well. But very few maintain this consistency, this discipline, and this hunger across every single match, regardless of the opponent or situation.” “The most dangerous thing about Japan is that they don’t depend on moments of brilliance from one player. They depend on collective understanding, structure, and unity and that is much harder to stop over 90 minutes.” “If you face them, you don’t feel comfortable for even one minute. They don’t give you rhythm, they don’t give you space, and they don’t give you control of the game at any point.” “That is why results like 4-0 don’t surprise me. What surprises me is how sustainable their performance level looks, as if they are able to repeat it again and again without dropping intensity.” “Right now, they are not just one of the stories of the tournament. They are becoming one of the standards of the tournament that others are now trying to copy.” “And if anyone is still calling them a dark horse, they are not watching closely enough. Because Japan are playing like a team that fully believes it belongs at the very top of world football, not just in moments but permanently.”
