Horrible in game changes from Koeman, Summerville should have played the 90
Not convinced with The Netherlands. Too static in possession and nowhere near enough rotations or 3rd man movements higher up the pitch. Static 4-3-3. Wide triangles on both sides but no interchanging between the 3 players makes it a lot easier to defend. Out of possession far too passive in a 5-4-1.
Netherlands 2nd goal comes from a simple Dumfries overlap on the right creating space for Summerville to cut inside. Can’t particularly say the same for the left as Van De Ven is at left back, he isn’t a natural LB so won’t particularly have good understanding on when to rotate with players in Netherlands left sided triangle and when to overlap and underlap in supporting attacks. (Not that anyone was consistently rotating in the Netherlands structure anyway). Combine Van De Ven simply not being a natural LB with Gakpo who isn’t the most successful at taking the opposition LB on 1v1 and it leads to the left side being extremely limited in what it can offer.
A draw a fair result.

Extremely basic 4-3-3 in possession for The Netherlands, rarely see any transition into a back 3 or any other settled possession shape, took 8 minutes to see the first rotation or bit of movement with Dumfries moving high and De Jong moving to RB.
Rare to see such little movement in possession.

Pedestrian pace from Netherlands in possession, far too slow on the ball. Japan missing Mitoma in transition to carry the ball forwards following winning the ball in the first or 2nd phase.

The Netherlands have been very basic in possession, 4-3-3 with very little movement or rotations, everything is static. Only from around 15-20 mins onwards have we seen Dumfries move high into the right half space once in settled possession. Apart from that very little to give the Japan 5-3-2/5-4-1 anything to think about. Off the ball an extremely passive 5-4-1 with De Jong dropping from midfield into the defensive line at CCB. Japan in a 4-2-4 from goal kicks which transitions into a 3-2-5 with the WB’s advanced, Nakamura often inverting into the left half space as seen just before the call for the drinks break. Japan off the ball pressing in a 5-4-1/5-3-2, when in the former the midfield line is very compact and narrow forcing The Dutch to pass to the dropping wingers with the WB’s ready to jump and engage on their first touch. Cagey start.

3rd man runs and movements everywhere for Germany throughout that 2nd half, Curaçao’s 4-4-2 diamond couldn’t contain them,
Dick Advocaat moved Chong out of possession at half time moving him from the tip of the diamond into the front 2 with Antonisse on in the ‘10’ position (where Chong was in the first half). Chong often made the first pass forwards to begin transition in the first half so after he got moved higher Curaçao struggled to move the ball from back to front when they won the ball deep.
Undav was top when he came on, great dropping movements, lovely weighted passes to teammates and bagged himself a goal.
Overall the fluidity in the final 3rd was great from Germany, rotations everywhere and players dropping and moving to create space for others. Still vulnerable in transition but many positives to take from the performance. 🇩🇪🇨🇼

Real blow for Curaçao to concede the 3rd before half time as they remained a threat in transition at 1 goal down. 2 goals down against far superior opposition MAY crumble the attacking spirit.
Germany’s intricate technical play between the lines has been top. Less impressed with their defensive transitions which we knew was a weakness of their’s pre game.

Here we go then Germany’s first game of the tournament, expect a 3-1-6 in possession for Germany, big emphasis on lots of bodies on the last line.
Germany can be susceptible to transitions as Kimmich and the CB’s don’t cover a lot of ground quickly so that’ll be Curaçao’s best hope,
Everyone obviously expects Curaçao to have many long periods without the ball so we won’t see much of Germany’s out of possession idea.

Below is an example of what I believe Turkey didn't do enough, when Australia transitioned from zonal to man to man off the ball it gave Turkey the required space to play down to one side before quickly playing to the other.

HAITI 🇭🇹
- 4-2-4 turned 3-2-5 in settled possession, how that shape was made up would vary with Haiti being very fluid positionally in the first phase, we often saw either Experience inverting from LB into midfield, Bellegarde and Jean Jacques would alternate in dropping into the backline, we sometimes saw Arcus invert from RB into midfield. Very fluid in the first phase
- However that first phase fluidity didn't particularly carry to the final 3rd, we often saw the key zones occupied but there was a lack of intent and penetration into those zones in the final 3rd. Nowhere near enough 3rd man movements higher up the pitch or coached attacking patterns of play
- Haiti didn't utilise their physicality advantage enough, when they got the ball into wide areas they often looked to take on the Scotland FB's in 1v1's to which Scotland continued to defend wide areas well. For me they should have looked to get the ball wide and cross early towards their 6'4 striker and other box crashing runs. It wasn't like they had a lack of numbers in the box for a cross, when they did cross we saw their 2 best opportunities arise. One with Isidor who nearly got on the end of a cross towards the back post for a tap in, and another with a header from Pierrot
- Defensively they pressed man to man from Scotland goal kicks, matching up with Scotland's 4-2-4 with higher FB's build up with a 4-4-2. In open play they sat in a 4-4-2 mid block. They did struggle to transition that block from zonal to man to man, oftentimes the press not being backed up behind the frontline with central jumps.
Overall I was impressed but also disappointed with Haiti, more 3rd man runs and space created for teammates to attack could have led to them getting a historic victory.

South Africa, Paraguay and Qatar showing us why getting absolutely 0 pressure on the ball high is a recipe for disaster.
I’m not saying go out and press erratically leaving gaps, but for me even if you have inferior quality players you still have to get pressure on the ball.

Top quality low block performance from Australia, 2 CM’s in their 5-4-1 block defended the half spaces superbly.
Yildiz coming on created better 1v1 threat in wide areas often cutting inside onto his right and looking to find the far corner, however the sheer compactness and will to throw bodies at the ball to block shots was incredible from Australia. They blocked everything!
As mentioned they defended the half spaces really well with the two CM’s in their 5-4-1 block tracking back into the last line and following Turkey players making runs from deep in behind. Czech should take notes! The vertical and horizontal compactness from Australia was superb.
In possession some nice rotations such as Okon Engstler moving to a left back position and Bos (LWB) moving high and dropping from there dragging his marker out leaving space for a teammate to attack the channel.
Very pleased Metcalfe scored, I did an entire different post based on Metcalfe’s performance so I won’t go into too much detail, but his protection of the half space between Australia’s outside RCB and RWB was incredible.
I didn’t think Turkey were too bad, often had the key zones occupied in attack, attacked the box with numbers, out of possession they transitioned from a 4-2-3-1 mid block into a man to man press pretty well. Just couldn’t find the final pass to break down the compact Australia block.
Australia top in the low block, had some great patterns of play in deep build up from goal kicks and remained a threat in transition when defending deep. My only concern for me would be for when they play against a far better side who would also pin them back, they’ll most likely be able to find the final pass and when nearly your whole game model is based off defending once you concede and you’re forced to open up it can lead to the floodgates opening at the back. A win they should absolutely enjoy though!
