Northern France, the beautiful Villers-Bretonneux war cemetery. Relatives were offered the chance to add an inscription…this one so infinitely sad that I researched him. Billy Rae, a printer from Marrickville in Sydney, only a little bloke, just 1.6m tall. Enlisted 1915, sent to France 1916. He was shot in the arm that year, but they patched him up and sent him back to the trenches to be killed just three months before war’s end. His younger brother Don, also a digger, survived the war but died in the influenza pandemic of 1919. Lest we forget.
