Hundreds of thousands Muslims gathered on the streets of Russia’s largest cities today to celebrate Eid al-Fitr (the end of Ramadan). Some right-wing nationalists in the West believe that there aren’t many Muslims in Russia, but the reality is very different. Next year, 20% of the 18-year-olds that will be drafted for military service will be Muslim. Around 2.5 million, or early 20%, of Moscow’s population is Muslim and their share is increasing every year due to immigration and higher birth rates.
