In 1982, conceptual artist Agnes Denes planted and harvested a two-acre field of wheat on a rubble-strewn landfill in Lower Manhattan, located just a few blocks from Wall Street and the World Trade Center, for her incredible project Wheatfield. This project was titled Wheatfield – A Confrontation. The site was covered in debris but valued at billions of dollars. Denes cleared it, planted wheat, and maintained the crop for months, ultimately harvesting nearly 1,000 pounds of grain. The project was not symbolic in a loose sense, it was literal agriculture in one of the most financially concentrated places on earth. It forced a direct comparison between land value and land use, between global finance and basic sustenance. After harvest, the wheat was distributed to over two dozen cities worldwide as part of an exhibition addressing hunger and resource distribution. Today, the land where the wheat once grew is now part of Battery Park City, real estate that ranks among the most expensive residential property in the United States. © History Pictures #archaeohistories

Someone broke into a Northern California falconry education and conservation center early Friday and intentionally released all of its birds, several of which are still missing and at risk, according to West Coast Falconry. Staff at the falconry — located about 40 miles north of Sacramento in Marysville — found the premises vandalized and all 11 birds set free. The intruder or intruders destroyed equipment and merchandise, and released the birds by cutting gear from their legs and removing them from their enclosures, “leaving them to fend for themselves,” the organization said. “These birds are not wild — they are trained and rely on human care,” West Coast Falconry said in a Facebook post. “Releasing them in this condition puts them at serious risk of injury or death.” Four birds were still missing as of midday Sunday: Walter, a great horned owl; Cubbie, a peregrine falcon; Amadon, a barn owl; and Cora, a dark-morph red-tailed hawk who is blind in one eye. The center said it was actively working to locate and recover the missing raptors, and asked for help from nearby residents to look out for birds who are “unusually comfortable around people.” People should not approach the raptors, but instead should report any sightings to West Coast Falconry. 📸: Courtesy of West Coast Falconry

hey so the male gaze is about how film and other visual media cultures assume their average audience member is a straight man and therefore frame female characters as sex objects or maternal figures with little in between it’s not about what kind of pretty someone is

the "i have nothing against adult content but" framing is a purity audit that only applies when it's a trans person or a woman Robert Downey Jr. was an abhorrent loser growing up, prison time and all, but became a Disney star. Mark Wahlberg caught an attempted murder charge and sells family movies; should i continue? 88% of substantiated child sexual abuse perpetrators are male (RAINN) Meanwhile, trans people experience child sexual abuse at prevalence rates ranging from 19% to 88% (PubMed) who would I trust with a child? definitely not this fucking loser
Emerald Apple@AI_EmeraldApple

Capcom needs to do more research before partnering with content creators, if they want to avoid backlash. I really don't think that a transgender woman with a history of adult video creation should be featured for playing a wholesome game with a child character. Now, personally, I don't think there is generally anything wrong with adult content as long as it's legal, sane, and consensual... but there are certain "spaces" where these kinds of people should stay out of. For example, people like Suzi should never be allowed to be an elementary school teacher or in other professions where the "intersection" of degenerate sexual content can be problematic. In this case, it's not direct contact with real children, but it's still public promotion of child-adjacent content by someone whose past work is overtly sexual for what Capcom is marketing as family-friendly adjacent sci fi adventure game... In addition to the content listed below with redacted titles, Suzi has produced over 7 more videos, for which the person is regretful of producing. There is already enough drama these days in the "trans" space with "trans kids" and various other content in that sphere that is highly problematic whenever children are involved. Now, I get that Suzi has rebranded themselves as the "wholesome" streamer and content creator, but AV content production isn't something you get to wipe away.

Golda Meir, 6 May, 1948, after a visit to ethnically-cleansed Haifa: "It is a dreadful thing to see the dead city. Next to the port I found children, women, the old, waiting for a way to leave. I entered the houses, there were houses where the coffee and pita bread were left on the table, and I could not avoid [thinking] that this, indeed, had been the picture in many Jewish towns [i.e., in Europe, during World War II]"
B.M.@ireallyhateyou

6/8 On 21-22 April, Haifa was officially taken by Zionist forces. By mid-May, only 4,000 Arabs were still in Haifa, out of the pre-war population of about 65,000. They were rounded-up in the Wadi Nisnas ghetto. Reports of the fall of Haifa spread quickly all across the country.

Lot of people talking about the babydoll dress lately. Fewer people talking about how it was not originally a dress, but a nightgown. Part of the perception of its transgressive nature is the association with lingerie. Sylvia Pedlar herself was a lingerie designer (Iris Lingerie)
Nadine@swanmaidens

The dress was originally created by Sylvia Pedlar as a response to the fabric shortage in the 1940s, drawing from the empire silhouette and regency nightgown. The initial came later after the film Baby Doll (1956) which she hated and refused to use it.

Not enough trains too many riders: "Rail ridership locally is surging. In fiscal year 2025, just under 200,000 travelers got on or off Amtrak trains at St. Paul’s Union Depot. That marked a 58% increase over the previous fiscal year and was the highest ridership in the Twin Cities by far in the past 15 years." startribune.com/as-ridership-s…

The Wicker Man becoming this version of pagan cosplay makes me feel insane. It’s literally spelled out in the film that it’s about landed gentry manipulating a local belief system for their own ends.
𝕯𝖆𝖜𝖘𝖋𝖊𝖗𝖆𝖙𝖚🦇@dawsferatu

It’s odd The Wicker Man kicked off the neo-pagan movement considering the whole movie seems to be about how Christianity has a better claim on your immortal soul than some bullshit made up in the late 19th century
