Are paper rejections really that bad? My papers get read by ~3 people on average. Each rejection means a resubmission, which means 3 more readers. After 4 rejections, that's double-digit readership.

This is way off, I think. The thing to pursue is to be the absolute BEST. I would regard the word competent as an insult.

I don't think it's a good idea to pursue greatness in any field. I think it's a good idea to pursue competence, and consistency. Greatness, if it happens, happens by accident when those things are in place.
