Mis-sold and Misled 1. Hidden MF commissions cut 25% of investor wealth; 41% cite mis-selling 2. FM and RBI warn banks on financial mis-selling; complaints rise 14% YoY 3. World Bank: Investor capital flows to “zombie” firms instead of productive firms damages GDP INSIGHTS: How Economies Die a. 2024-2026 Studies by World Bank, US Fed, and NBER: Financial distortions result in investor capital mis-allocation to “sub-optimal” firms. That is a key driver of long-term economic drag. b. When capital is diverted from high-productivity firms to “zombie” firms that excel at capturing “investor attention,” it slows down the pace of innovation and deprives the economy of potential gains in aggregate productivity by 30-70%. c. 15% increase in a nation’s trust level can increase GDP by 1%. Financial mis-selling erodes that trust capital. (Knack and Keefer, 2001) Mutual Fund Mis-selling in India a. SEBI Investor Survey (Jan 2026) covering 53,357 households and 1,313 MF intermediaries showed that 51% of those who don't invest in MFs do so due to a “lack of trust and transparency.” b. In the SEBI Survey, 41% of MF intermediaries themselves reported mis-selling of MF products as a top investor complaint. c. MF "Direct Plans" involve no middleman commissions, but MF "Regular Plans" purchased through MF distributors involve commissions. Only 28.4% of retail investors buy direct, while 71.6% buy from distributors. d. Why do retail investors choose “Regular Plans” over “Direct Plans”? Because the hidden impact of intermediary commissions is not disclosed to the customer. e. 1Finance report (Jan 2026): Hidden commissions in Regular MF Plans can drain 25% of investor wealth over a 10-year period (compounding loss). In 80% of equity MF schemes, the wealth gap in Regular Plans was at least 25% compared to direct plans. f. AMFI divides the MF market into two categories: Top 30 Cities (T30) and B30 (tier 2/3/4 towns and villages). B30 locations currently account for 19% of total MF industry AUM (₹15.5 lakh cr out of ₹82 lakh cr total). g. New MF growth in 2024-25 is heavily B30 (town and village) driven. While their legacy share is only 19%, new MF account opening share is over 50% from B30. h. From Apr 2024 to Mar 2025 (market peak), new SIP registrations were 56% from B30. So, small town and villages now lead in new SIP momentum. i. AMFI Master Circular (Jan 2026) says: “MF distributors must highlight risk factors of each scheme to investors and desist from making exaggerated claims.” Does your bank relationship manager discuss risks with you? j. 6 Cases of Mis-selling among Crores of Investors: In 2025, AMFI directed MFs to publish quarterly reports of mis-selling by MF distributors. Out of the top 20 AMCs, 4 reported total 6 cases of mis-selling (Jan-Mar 2025). Other 16 AMCs reported: “Nil”. Financial Mis-selling is in the DNA a. HDFC Bank Dubai persuaded NRI clients to break their FDs and invest in AT-1 bonds, which were eventually written down to zero. Investors lost ₹1,100 crores. Bank called it “technical issue” instead of “mis-selling.” b. On Feb 23, 2026, the Finance Minister came down heavily on banks for mis-selling financial products, and asked them to focus on their “core business” instead of becoming insurance salesmen. c. On Feb 11, 2026, the RBI issued stringent draft guidelines on financial mis-selling, saying banks will have to refund full amount + any loss arising from mis-selling of any financial products to customers. d. 1Finance Survey: 57% of bank relationship managers admitted their bosses pressured them to mis-sell unsuitable products to customers to meet targets. e. In FY2025, IRDAI (insurance regulator) reported 14% YoY increase in complaints related to mis-selling, misleading disclosures, and unsuitable products. ENDPIECE Beware of financial middlemen who will not hesitate from ruining your life's savings just for 1% commission. @arabicatrader
