It's because the script desperately wants the audience to sympathize with Jax, but at the same time doesn't want to make it too obvious. So it has the characters react to Jax, but it's immediately cut off with the argument of "keeping the peace." This scene is symptomatic of that

@silohettee @LumiSuperior02 @Jcsully3 I don't think I've ever heard that it needs to hold stones? I think it just copies the pokemon in its current state, mega or not

I do want to try and use the move "Thief" to see if that hinders the ability to mega evolve becuase if it does hinder then that would confirm that Ditto needs the mega stone
