I always thought the Avatar franchise sort of struggled with its thematic consistency of how it frames the Avatar state considering how Kyoshi and Roku used it to save countless lives.
I think the answer lies in the fact the Avatar State is destructive for Aang specifically.

The worst writing decision they made in recent stories was reducing the Avatar State to just a power-up. What made it compelling before was how it felt like a terrifying possession overtaking the Avatar’s body, not something you’d pop out after every minor inconvenience
